According to a report by Antena 3, the man was practising Downwind foil paddling, a high-speed water sport that uses a hydrofoil to glide across the water, when the shark struck. The animal is said to have first attacked his board before biting the man on the leg, leaving him with a deep wound.
The incident took place off the coast near the Los Molinos area, a popular spot on the western side of the island, yesterday afternoon (Sunday). Despite the severity of the bite, the man was able to return to shore unaided, and no life-threatening injuries were reported.
Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic as news of the attack spread, although local authorities have not confirmed whether additional safety measures, such as beach closures or surveillance, are being implemented in response.
Shark sightings around the Canary Islands are rare, and actual attacks are even more unusual. However, marine authorities are urging caution and reminding swimmers and water sports participants to stay alert and report any suspicious activity in the water.
