Shops & supermarkets under lockdown!
#61
According to their advertisement posted on Facebook. The Spar in Atlantico shopping centre will close at 3pm from  the 5th to 12th April. Doesn’t say what time they open, I assume the usual 9am & also doesn’t say anything about from now to 5th.

I'm glad for the update, so thank you for that, but the information itself is irritating. It's the same with the Dinos— fewer stores and shorter opening hours mean the same amount of people have to visit with less time to do so, making the shops busier and harder for people to maintain distance!  Rolleyes I understand it's a cost-cutting measure, but the grocery stores are probably the only businesses around still making good Money, so my sympathy for them is rather limited. That said, my report from today:

CALETA: SPAR, ATLANTICO

Not as busy as I was expecting, which was a blessing. Was able to get most of the items we needed, though they were sold out of a few specific hygiene/cleaning products. Good stock of most items, plenty of paper products, lots of fresh produce, decent supply of confectionary. There was a hygiene station inside the door which I completely missed and which nobody directed me to, so be aware that there is a place to disinfect your hands, get gloves, and wipe down your trolley, but it is easy to miss. Almost everyone wearing gloves, but many of the staff are not wearing masks. In general, I saw a lot fewer masks there in comparison to out at Mercadona, in the shoppers as well as the staff. Was lovely to get the walk, but I still have a horrible feeling when I'm outside like I'm doing something wrong!

CALETA: BRITISH SHOP, LOWER TOWN

Didn't get a chance to stop in today, but they are open, if people were wondering!

It’s probably not just a cost saving exercise. It’s also probably because of staff shortages & also trying to limit the exposure of their staff to the public. I applaud all workers who are still doing their bit to keep our lives as normal as possible. At this point in time I have a large number of staff in supermarkets putting themselves in harms way so the shops stay open. I call them all heroes ❤️❤️

You're completely right that we owe a lot of gratitude to those who are working so that we can continue to have supplies, but I don't think there is much in the way of staff shortages. Unemployment is huge right now, and a lot of people are themselves grateful to have work when so many do not, and would like as many hours as possible. I really doubt minimising staff exposure is their concern, but I suppose if it happens anyway, it's a blessing.

That said, I do not believe that decreasing hours and thereby increasing traffic during the few remaining open hours is beneficial to staff or shoppers. Right now crowds benefit nobody, and if I were working in a supermarket, I would rather do 8 hours with fewer people who are able to maintain distance than 4 hours in a packed shop where people are on top of one another and frantic like they are back home.

It's been amazing here in comparison with the quieter and safer shops, and I would hate for that to change, for the staff members and for the public.

Hi Ducks,
I am in the U.K. so not seeing what you are seeing. I know at the moment I have about 15 to 20% staff shortage either because of personal isolation or due to the 12 wk “shielding” initiative of the government/ health agencies, so it is having an effect, albeit manageable at this point. My point was simply that the only alternative to taking on more staff is to limit hours to what they can physically do. Hard choice for any employer at this time. More staff & longer hours means more exposure but I get your point about keeping shops quieter with longer hours as well. Kind of “catch 22” just now 😁😁
