Study of Marine Litter
#1
From Radio Sintonia:

The Observatory for the study of marine litter of Fuerteventura begins its journey today with the aim of becoming a scientific benchmark in the field of Macaronesia in the study of the impacts and monitoring of marine litter on the coasts, the seabed and the surrounding waters of the islands.
The project is part of the strategy of the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, Circular Economy and R & D + i of the Island Council for the reduction of marine litter, and has the collaboration of the Biodiversity Foundation of the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, through the Pleamar Program, co-financed by the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund (FEMP).
The counselor Marlene Figueroa has pointed out that this laboratory was born with the vocation of becoming a research center “because it is not enough to collect the garbage, it is necessary to analyze it, monitor it, and obtain information on flows to fight effectively against pollution in general and in a very particular way against marine pollution, which affects the islands in a very special way "
The Marine Garbage Observatory will allow the application of the technical scientific method to analyze the types of garbage and waste that reach the coasts, from a micro and macro perspective, generate knowledge, awareness and citizen participation on this serious problem and define effective strategies fight against pollution.
To this end, the project management has established collaboration channels with specialists from Canary Islands Universities, voluntary associations, Fishermen's Guilds, underwater fishing associations, and groups of marine sports fans, as well as waste managers and recycling experts. , with the aim of creating a stable multidisciplinary work group that faces the challenge of "de-embasurization".

Tamara: perhaps the Captain or someone else with good Spanish can suggest a translation of the last word? I guess it is something to do with basura?

200 people are trained to manage marine litter.

Over 200 people participated in the 11 online, blended and face-to-face trainings of the Training project in Marine Litter Management in Areas of the Natura 2000 Network. This training action was developed by the Cabildo de Fuerteventura, through the Ministry of Environmental Sustainability and the Biosphere Reserve, and co-financed by the Biodiversity Foundation and the European Social Development Fund.

This training program was aimed at people employed or in ERTE interested in improving their skills in marine litter management and sustainability. The objective is to increase the skills and complete the professional profile of the participants from a sustainable point of view, delving into topics such as plastic pollution, environmental education, cetaceans, turtles and awareness to different groups.

The trainings were given from October 2021, with a total of 336 hours of training, with the collaboration of different entities of the Island and other areas of the Island Corporation such as Waste or Youth. People from Fuerteventura, Lanzarote, Gran Canaria, Tenerife and Andalusia have participated.
The counselor of the area, Lola García, and the manager of the Biosphere Reserve, Tony Gallardo, delivered the certifications of the second part of the project. During the event, held at the Palace of Training and Congresses, a presentation of the results obtained in the project was made.

García stressed the importance of this type of training "to join forces and try to raise awareness of the importance of fighting against marine litter and how it affects the biodiversity and marine fauna of Fuerteventura". The island councilor also thanked the dedication of the teachers, marine biologists Alberto Sarabia and María Rodríguez, as well as the project administrator, Sandra Benítez.

The participants have shown their high degree of satisfaction in the surveys carried out, highlighting the need to carry out this type of training that guarantees quality training and complements their professional profiles.
