Who enforces these rules?
We were stopped by the Police once, asked to see my driving licence, so showed him, he asked if this was a hire car, said no and produced documents to show we owned it with insurance etc.
Said we need a Spanish driving licence, we told him we don’t as only here for 12 weeks, which was true, but he had no proof that we were here longer, so let us go.
Checked with a friend who works in the courts and she said don’t worry as you are ok even if you stay longer as no one looks thru any records, just say 12 weeks and as that sound reasonable to buy a car for that long a stay, you will have no problem.

In the last rolling 12 months we have been here on the island / Canaries / In Spain 152 days so have decided to apply for our Residencia using a company called The Boxx Pro, we go to the PDR Police station next week to complete all the formalities.  I will check with them and report back and clarify the 90 / 183 day rules and implications and in particular where you pay your income tax especially as in our case and I am sure many others on here who are retired their income is generated in the UK / home country.

In response to MB30's comment with ticketing technology nowadays the authorities could soon check passenger manifests for both flights & ferries and put together how long you have been on the island.

Sam by the way I think this thread title should now be updated.
