Volcanic activity in Canary Islands 2022

By Anna Santana . The recent eruption of Cumbre Vieja must mark "a before and after" regarding the management of volcanic risk in the Canary Islands, the only area of the national territory exposed to this factor, and develop a strategy in this area "or else, I would have learned nothing”, affirms the scientific coordinator of INVOLCAN , Nemesio Pérez, more so taking into account the probability of a next volcanic eruption in the Canary Islands in approximately 50 years.

In an interview with EFE, Nemesio Pérez points out that the eruption recorded on the island of La Palma has been a turning point “that forces our society -administrators and administrators- to develop a Canarian Strategy for Volcanic Risk Reduction because otherwise we wouldn't have learned anything from what just happened."

Already during the visit of the presidents of Spain and the Canary Islands, Pedro Sánchez and Ángel Víctor Torres, respectively, to La Palma on December 26, 2021, the scientific coordinator of INVOLCAN told them that the eruption of Cumbre Vieja "should mark a before and after on volcanic risk management in Spain; say the Canary Islands, the only part of the national territory exposed to volcanic risk”.

At present, an important effort is being made for the recovery of La Palma "and we are forgetting what has been the real cause of this great social and economic impact on the island, which has not been mainly a volcanic eruption (which also) , but the very poor perception that our society has about the volcanic risk in the Canary Islands”, points out Nemesio Pérez.

And this is because development has been promoted in the Autonomous Community during the last 50 years "without paying the necessary and sufficient attention" to complete as it should all those actions aimed at reducing the volcanic risk in the Canary Islands.

Therefore, the existence of a Canarian Strategy for the Reduction of Volcanic Risk applicable to La Palma "is and will be essential" to strengthen the project for the recovery of the island, argues the scientific coordinator of INVOLCAN, who recalls that it has been "sowing in society this seed that does not finish germinating as it should."

However, he continues, he hopes that this eruption "and our level of preventive preparation prior to it - clearly improvable despite the efforts made - will open our eyes to worry and deal with the management of volcanic risk in the Canary Islands as this society deserves”.

The Volcanological Institute of the Canary Islands has proposed the need for this document and has the tools to develop the Canary Strategy for Volcanic Risk Reduction under three principles, which are scientific knowledge, citizen participation and consensus.

Precisely INVOLCAN researchers Nemesio Pérez, Pedro Hernández and Luca D'Auria presented a paper entitled "Lessons learned in the recent eruption of Cumbre Vieja: the need for a strategy to reduce volcanic risk in the Canary Islands" in the eleventh edition of the largest international conference on volcanic risk management, held June 12-17 in Crete.

PROBABILITIES OF A NEXT VOLCANIC ERUPTION IN THE CANARY ISLANDS
Among other issues, the work recalls that the islands of Tenerife, La Palma, El Hierro and Lanzarote have been the scene of the 18 historical eruptions recorded in the Canary Islands, they are the ones with the greatest volcanism and the eruption of Cumbre Vieja in 2021 has been the most important in Europe in the last 75 years.

According to INVOLCAN, the probabilities of a future volcanic eruption for the Canary Islands in a time window of 50 years are 75 percent, and by islands this percentage is 48.7% for La Palma and; 39.4% for Tenerife.

Both UNESCO and the International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth's Interior recommend drawing up volcanic hazard maps and developing multidisciplinary programs for monitoring volcanic activity, as well as emergency plans to educate the population and minimize the loss of human lives. .

However, in the Canary Islands there is a poor perception of volcanic risk and there is a lack of continuous support from public administrations to establish educational programs in this area, with a lack of commitment also when it comes to materializing unanimous decisions that have been adopted in legislative chambers to improve volcanic risk management.

There are also pressures from the tourism sector towards the political class to avoid talking about volcanic risk and there is a lack of coordination between the different Spanish research groups working on volcanic risk management.

In addition, Civil Protection has not developed and promoted exercises (drills) of the emergency plan against volcanic risk.

INVOLCAN proposes for the Canarian Volcanic Risk Reduction Strategy workshops or meetings aimed at public authorities, security and emergency managers, health, social agents, the educational community, journalists, territorial planners, the tourism sector, other business sectors and economists and lawyers .

In addition, representatives of the energy and water, transport and communications sectors will also take part in these workshops focused on knowledge of volcanoes and volcanic risk management.

It is about unifying all public efforts to optimize volcanic risk management, establishing legal mechanisms that guarantee continuous improvement in this area and improving knowledge of the impact of this natural risk in the Canary Islands for the next 50 years.

The challenges are also to place a special emphasis on education and perception of volcanic risk for a change in attitude, both individual and collective, and to design a good communication program on volcanic risk among organizations, institutions and people related to this management, which will be vital for disaster risk reduction.

Meanwhile, INVOLCAN is waiting for the public administrations to provide the resources "to be able to prepare this important document... otherwise we have not learned anything from this eruption or from volcanic risk management in the Canary Islands", points out Nemesio Pérez .

Great work by Pedro Suarez with this 3D animation of the Tenerife Earthquake that shows us a little bit of everything we are experiencing these last few years in Tenerife.
The most remarkable is the cluster or swarm of earthquakes in the area under the Caldera de Ucanca corresponding to that of the phonolithic chamber at about 15-11 km deep, another in the area of Vilaflor de Chasna at 6-7 km deep, and even the qu and occurred around Adeje area, slightly less and more inclined.
Remarkable are the earthquakes of 2004 under Icod and those that appear in the hydrothermal zone of the Teide at 1-4 km (where there is a bolazo that is an Earthquake of 3 that occurred in the middle of the night of the volcanoes). And then the whole system oriented according to the NNW - SSE direction, just like in Iron and Palm.
As for yesterday's activity, it seems to have decreased since, but we continue to see some small earthquakes, we will see what it does this afternoon, we could repeat, we will see if more or calms down... this can't be known. (Enrique)

10/07/2020 - 22:30h Canary Islands. - HIGHLIGHT Earthquake IN THE CENTER OF TENERIFE. - TECTONIC AND VOLCANIC. - A 2.1 magnitude Earthquake in the upper area of the Orotava valley in Fasnia at 7 km that is of Tectonic type and shows us regional tensions in the area of the NE ridge very close to the Arafo volcano.

es2022nknvs 10/07/2020 17:20:04 28.3333 -16.4891 7.0 km M 2.1 mbLg SE LA OROTAVA. ITF

But a few hours later something has happened that I did not expect, the area of the phonolithic chamber of the Ucanca Caldera has responded to these efforts with a typically volcanic Earthquake and quite intense 2.1 or more to 18.2 km for what we have had h Until now. Presented as a triad of signals give us a hybrid, containing several long-term, rock-breaking and tectonic-type LP earthquakes.

It presents itself as a triple bolt that augments nothing good as it unlocks the magma key in the area to move in the coming days, so it is not ruleable that we have a swarm with included pressurization in the coming days/weeks. In some stations, such as Rajada Mountain, it has a magnitude of up to 3 in CRAJ so it could have been slightly felt by the population.

This event has not come alone and there have been more tremors than have only located one that has occurred a little after which you assign a 1.2 magnitude at 12.2 km, in the high area of the boiler that responds to what happens most bottom. It is perfectly appreciated at the Gomera. I guess they will review it.

Before all this, this early morning we have had a few more efforts and all of them have affected areas where we have had magma entries or accumulations by very recent intrusions, both the boiler of Ucanca and the area of Adeje, alike The Vilaflor area of Chasna, in the southern dorsals and indicating many regional efforts affecting the island of Tenerife.

And now what? , as the curve of seismic released accumulated energy continues to rise and show a reactivation of Tenerife's volcanic system... and we don't know until when it will continue like this, it may stop, it may continue or it may accelerate, no one knows, at the moment it reacts, it's not turkey snot.

https://www.volcanodiscovery.com/teneri..../2022.html

EDITED: Earthquakes follow and several more shivers are seen, with a swarm of half a dozen earthquakes grouped in the last minutes at 22:53h Canary Islands, 21:53 UTC time of the seismogram, not located yet. (Enrique).

EDITED2: They already located the bigger one, the same spot.. (Enrique)

NOTE: This is a follow-up of volcanic activity in the Canary Islands, today in Tenerife, whoever wants to alarm is up to them, but at the moment there is nothing indicating a pre-eruptive scenario of the moment, it is just a rebound more in the many that carries d this is 2016 and what now we'll see where it stays. If it wants to erupt, it will be noticed all over the island and by all the people, this is just the precedents or preparations. (Enrique)

Reading a lot of comments over the internet whats interesting is that it seems that some of the islanders on Tenerife are burying their hands in the sands again.

Some do not want to know about the activity and are saying stop alarming the islanders a lot of the Islanders from La Palma are arguing with them trying to explain to them its best to be made aware of whats happening (starting to happen) and not have to run away from your own house not even having time to put panties on.
