Wildlife on Fuerteventura

Here's what those fish look like below the surface Tamara.

The silver/grey fish are grey mullet and the camo / brown ones are sand gobies


 

Thanks GF, great video. Was slightly disturbed by all the dust? on the surface of the water - the pools always look so clean! One query, at 1:26 are my eyes deceiving me or is there a white jug in the middle of the scene?

A few from today:

 
I love these black and white striped bees and they love my lavender.

   
An army of ants were collecting the tiny fruit/seeds from this plant today and taking it at least 10m - across the road and into another garden!

  
Birds on the beach at El Cotillo - one legged 'Hoppity' fell on the crumb to ensure he won the race!

this little fella kept making his presence known on the beach.

[Gone Fishing]

at 1:26 are my eyes deceiving me or is there a white jug in the middle of the scene?  

I'll admit Tamara, that I had to look twice and rewind and pause the clip, but yes, it does look like a little jug.

I think it's a cluster of a marine aquatic plant / alga known as Peacocks Tail (Padina pavonica).
There are lots of similar clusters clinging to the rocks in the rock pool and I think that the ''jug'' is just one of those naturally occurring things which happen to resemble something man-made.

The sparrows have been spring cleaning their nest. How many baby sparrows are cocooned in peacock feathers? 

 

not sure what this little fella is but he looked very smart on my banana tree


my garden is inundated with hummingbird moths at the moment, small and large, with varying shades of orange and red showing through their wings
   

 

the wings were moving so quickly they disappeared altogether in this one


their proboscis are amazing!

As I neared the cliffs below Tindaya I startled a small herd of wild goats:

 

apart from a couple of gulls there was no other wildlife to be seen. I did hear what sounded like a skylark - do we have them out here?

I've been trying to get a pic of the hoopoes coming back to roost each evening in the tree opposite our house - they're not brilliant but represent a week of trying!

attention diverted to slightly larger fly landing on edge of leaf

[Can the Man]

A chance encounter with a bird landing on next door's roof on Friday. I think it is a heron although happy to be corrected. Pic 2 is my favourite!

Tamara I love the picture of the heron coming in to land with the legs dangling. Congratulations on capturing this.

Ravens heading inland to roost

 

There are several groups of trees near me and the number/variety of birds in them each night is quite amazing. They all seem to get on and give each other room and the different species arrive in the same order each evening. Of the ones I see, first come the sparrows, then the hoopoes, then the doves/pigeons and lastly the ravens. On the ground near them are stone curlews who very noisily announce their arrival. We also have a lot of coursers which I know lay their eggs on the ground but I'm not sure where they are at night when not on eggs. I'll be glad when the sparrows return to the trees, at present they are making a lot of mess on my terrace with the nest up in the eaves.

Just realised I hadn't posted the previous day's haul of insects, a few of which were unfortunately found drowned in a swimming pool:

 

think this is the same as the one spotted on the sand dunes a while back.
