Radio Sintonia:
The works surrounding the Cheese Museum will not be finished to host the XXXIV Island Craft Fair.
The president of the Cabildo de Fuerteventura, Sergio Lloret, presented today, Tuesday, January 10, the improvement works that will be carried out on the platform adjacent to the Cheese Museum and the Mill of Antigua. Some works that will be developed in order to improve the space of 15,000 square meters of surface for parking and that traditionally hosts the Insular Craft Fair organized in collaboration with the Mafasca Collective.
As explained by the president, Sergio Lloret, the state in which the platform is currently "made unfeasible" the celebration of the event, which is why from the Island Council "we assume the challenge of promoting" this first intervention, with an execution period of five months and a budget of almost 700 thousand euros, which would allow the space "is in conditions for use if the municipality of Antigua and the Mafasca Collective wanted to make the next edition of the Fair in it".
However, for Matías Peña, "without a doubt, the start of execution of this project is good news for the municipality since it was requested by the City Council of Antigua four years ago", "but the start of works is late to ensure that it is completed on time and with enough time to celebrate the next edition of the Island Craft Fair".
"The delay in awarding the project to a construction manager and the time of five
months scheduled for its execution does not guarantee, even if there is talk of commitments,
that it can accommodate with all the necessary guarantees the fairground requested for
four years," says Peña.
In anticipation of what happened, representatives of the Organization of the Island Craft Fair, Antigua City Council and Mafasca Collective Foundation, had
already met in October 2022 to announce the celebration of
the XXXIV Insular Craft Fair in the Plaza de Antigua on Thursday 4, Friday 5, Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 May
, not coinciding in the regional or insular Calendar with similar event.
The works to be developed will solve the structural defects detected in the space, with the collapse of the foundations of the same, "for several years", since the last action developed in the environment dates back to 2015, as explained by Lloret.
This action is included in the Canary Islands Development Fund (FDCAN Fuerteventura Program 2022-2026) as part of the specific strategic line of Investment in Infrastructures for infrastructures of public spaces in Fuerteventura with tourist potential.
However, as explained by the president of the Cabildo, this action will only be the first phase of a deeper intervention planned for this space, called to become an environment capable of hosting "not only the Craft Fair, but also other activities that can be programmed, having the necessary elements for it, such as toilets, areas of administrative use, warehouse, etc.".
To achieve this objective, the declaration of Public and Social Interest of the land, qualified as rustic, will be carried out to allow the execution, in a second phase, of the necessary improvements of this environment, to turn it into "a temporary fairground", capable of housing the necessary facilities to host the Events that are planned in it.
According to Lloret, this file of declaration of the Public and Social Interest of the Land could be ready to start its processing phase "around the month of February".
In this way, said the president, with the work presented today the Island Council "fulfills the demand of the Mafasca Collective, the City Council and the neighbors of Antigua," said Lloret, laying the foundations for the celebration in the space of the Insular Craft Fair when the local administration so decides, as well as by continuing with the procedures for the execution of a project that will allow the space to become a true enclave for the celebration of Events of social interest.
The mayor of Antigua, Matías Peña García, together with the councilors of Urban Planning and Culture, Juan Pedro Galván Lasso and Agustín G. Rodríguez, respectively have attended the call of the president of the Cabildo de Fuerteventura, Sergio Lloret, for the signing of the act of staking out the work of Conditioning of the parking platform of the Museum of Cheese and Mill of Antigua.
