More than 100 volunteers collect ton and a half of waste on the beach of Cofete
More than 100 volunteers, entities and citizen groups attended, one more year, the day of cleaning of plastic waste 'Clean Cofete' (Limpia Cofete), which took place on Sunday 10 March.
This volunteer action is part of the European campaign for the cleaning of public spaces "Let's Clean Up Europe", an initiative that coordinates more than 1,500 cleaning actions on different European beaches each year.
The Councils of Environment and Beaches of the City Council of Pájara, directed by Farés Sosa Rodríguez and Jorge Martín Brito, collaborate in the development of this activity since its first edition in 2014, with the aim of raising awareness among the population about the presence of waste on the beaches.
For the Mayor of Pájara, Rafael Perdomo Betancor, "it is essential to continue supporting this citizen mobilization, with the aim of addressing a problem as widespread worldwide as the presence of waste and plastics in the oceans."
The fifth edition of "Clean Cofete" has been a success, where it has managed to collect tons and a half of garbage, waste derived from plastic, nets and ropes, respectively.
'Clean Cofete' began five years ago with an appeal on the social network Facebook by users of the beach of Cofete. An initiative that also includes the City Council of Pájara, with the collaboration of the Cabildo de Fuerteventura, Clean Water, Clean Ocean Project, the Fuerteventura CEM Medical Center, Aguas de Teror, HolaFM, the German news portal Fuerteventurazeitung, the restaurant UNICO Keatvibüro, the Association Social Work Sombrero del Pueblo and Cafe Cha Cha, among others.
Also, in this 2019 school year, students in the 9th and 10th grades of Baden-Württemberg in Germany are taught in their geography classes about this beach cleaning campaign in Fuerteventura.
