Driving in Fuerteventura for UK drivers after Brexit
#11
Well Spitfire was correct when he said that from the 1st Feb more Post offices are issuing IDP`s, seems like the PO website not been updated and some confusion with certain staff about the situation.

I went to what was supposed to be the nearest PO to get my IDP. When I got it issued mentioned that I had to travel some distance to get the IDP. Was informed that I could have got it in my local area. Phoned my wife and she went to the local PO and was the first customer to have the IDP issued from that office.

So seems due to the expected increase of IDP`s more local PO`s now can issue an IDP, so if you are planning to get one ignore the online advice and check first with your local branch. Make sure if you are getting one before the 29th March you get it to start from the 28th March or the date you are arriving after the 29th.

A good point beachlife, you can get them up to 3 months in advance of when you need them to start, we got ours in September but the start date was Dec ready for our January trip to South Africa plus we have them if we need them for our trip back to UK end of March early April.

Just in case .……… for those of us living in Fuerte and having Spanish Driving licences I have found this doc on how to obtain an IDP here to cover you for driving in the UK.
Just in case .……… I'm going to attempt to get one for myself soon as I'll be using a hire car in the UK early in the summer, I'll let you know how I get on at Trafico!

So what happens to those who are currently on the island and will still be after 29th March without an IDP just having a UK licence ?  Driving illegally?

Sanchez just said in the news that he would sign a decree on Friday to protect the rights of Brits in Spain, AND to preserve the normal trade flow WHATEVER the outcome on 29 March.

I'm not doing anything yet.

I decided to swap mine now because of possible implications of Brexit - I did NOT want to risk having to take a Spanish test, and the fact that my UK licence runs out next year anyway.

I would like point out that it’s the EU and not Spain you will have to deal with after Brexit. If I were you  I would sort it sooner rather than later.

I'm stuck already! I need to make an appointment at Trafico - I've made them before, no problem, but this time I can't find the appropriate option (IDP) in the drop down boxes, only new licence, change licence etc. Normally I'd just choose one and chance my luck but there's a big message on the DGT site saying if you don't choose the right option they won't serve you! Anyone have any previous knowledge?

Update - system has now let me book a 'general' appointment' - I'll let you know how I get on.
