Freight traffic rises but passengers drop in the capital port.
In general, international maritime traffic tends to re-emerge after the COVID crisis and the subsequent situation of excess demand.
In October (2022-2021), Puertos de Las Palmas fell by -5.99% conditioned by the decrease in international container traffic (-21.82% in transits), compared to the rise of bunkering (22.86%) and ro-ro in tons (5.92%).
In Puerto del Rosario, traffic rose in October 2022 by 12.46 percent compared to the same month in 2021. Regular line passengers were down -22.32 percent. Goods rose 12.43 percent. Containers rose 7.20 percent.
The president of the Port Authority of Las Palmas (APLP), Luis Ibarra, points out that "the October data show a change in international container maritime traffic after the COVID crisis and the subsequent situation of excess demand, which now seems to be rebalancing". "The interannual of October 2022-2021 reveals that both merchandise from abroad, with -21.35 percent, and total containers, with -7.90 percent, and transits, excluding transshipments, with -21.82 percent, are in a process of readaptation to a less stressed market."

The port system of the province of Las Palmas (which includes the ports of Las Palmas, Arrecife, Puerto del Rosario, Arinaga and Salinetas) maintains the growth of total traffic in the accumulated January-October 2022-2019, with 7.63% -pre-pandemic figures-, and 2022-2021, with 2.25%
In the APLP as a whole, in the accumulated until October 2022-2021 the traffic, passengers increased by 58.15 percent (35.07 percent in regular line regime and 170.02 percent in cruises); Freight tonnes rose 1.12 percent; frozen fish rose 14.98 percent; bunkering increased by 14.99 percent; TEUs were down -0.66 percent; and ro-ro grew 17.66 percent in units and 19.98 percent in tons.
In the Port of Las Palmas, traffic fell in October 2022 by -9.21 percent compared to the same month of 2021, with a rebound in bunkering of 22.91 percent. Regular line passengers were down -3.63 percent. Ro-ro rose 3.55 percent in units and 4.75 percent in tonnes.
It should be noted that goods fell by -11.89 percent (cabotage grew by 9.38 percent while that from abroad fell by -22.19 percent) and containers fell by -9.48 percent (-21.81 percent transits of TEUs).
In Arrecife, traffic rose in October 2022 by 6.02 percent compared to the same month in 2021. Regular line passengers were down -25.88 percent. Goods rose 5.63 percent. Containers rose 7.63 percent.
In Arinaga, traffic rose in October 2022 by 94.37 percent compared to the same month in 2021. Last month, 24,948 tons were moved in this port.
In Salinetas (specialized in supplying fuel for aviation), traffic rose in October 2022 by 32.31 percent compared to the same month of 2021. It moved 58,909 tons in that period.
Accumulated 2022-2019
In the case of the Port of Las Palmas, and following the comparison of the accumulated January-October 2022 and 2019 (a balanced comparison, free of the distortion on world maritime traffic caused by COVID in 2020), total traffic grew by 7.86 percent. In addition, regular passenger traffic increased by 17.90 per cent; tonnes of goods grew by 8.35 per cent; frozen fish did 40.12 percent; bunkering rose 4.66 percent; TEUs were up 16.38 percent; and the Ro-Ro gained 6.33 percent in units and 5.61 percent in tonnes.
