The Territorial Information System of the Canary Islands and the update of the Census of discharges from land to sea, included in the Fuerteventura report of the Government of the Canary Islands, of June of this year, mark 40 points of discharges on the island.
The most common type of discharge is urban wastewater. In fact, half of the discharges are of this type, and almost a third are brine from desalination plants. The rest, a minority, are refrigeration and swimming pools.
Three out of four of these registered discharges are active. Regarding their administrative situation, of the total number of points registered on the island, half of them do not have authorization. Of the rest, approximately half have a permit and the other is in the process of obtaining authorization. That is the case of almost all those who are in Puerto del Rosario.
Four of these discharges are identified as submarine outfalls, 34 as drainage pipes and two more as installations for discharges in the maritime-terrestrial public domain. Regarding the drainage pipes, the largest number is located in the capital municipality, with 11, and in La Oliva, where there are 10. In the case of the outfalls, all the municipalities have one, except Antigua, where none have been registered.
Thirteen of the discharges registered are in La Oliva, most in Corralejo, but also four in El Cotillo and one in Isla de Lobos. In Puerto del Rosario there are 12 spills. In the municipalities of Antigua and Pájara there are six in each, and in Tuineje, three.
In the south there is the Puertito de la Cruz desalination plant, which is not authorised, and in Morro Jable there is an unauthorised drainage pipe, in the heart of the tourist coast, and the desalination plant, with authorisation. The Club Aldiana desalination plant is not authorized, the Butihondo submarine outfall is in the process of being processed and the Cañada del Río desalination plant does not have authorization either.
In Gran Tarajal the desalination plant is authorised but not the submarine outfall, owned by the Tuineje City Council. In Caleta de Fuste, the desalination plant of Antigua Beach Club and the desalination plant of the golf course are authorised. It also has the Castillo and Nuevo Horizonte urbanization treatment plant and the Montaña Blanca desalination plant, while the Anjoca plant does not have a permit. The desalination plant and the treatment plant of the Barceló Puerto Castillo Hotel, one is authorized and the other is in process.
In Puerto del Rosario, the facilities of the swimming pools of the Hotel El Mirador, in Playa Blanca, are not permitted, but they are not active, and the desalination plant of Puerto del Rosario, owned by the Consortium of Water Supply to Fuerteventura (CAAF). The Las Salinas thermal power plant does have authorisation. The rest are in process: the spillways of the Los Pozos Wastewater Pumping Station (EBAR), the EBAR Puerto, the EBAR Médico Peña, the EBAR Club Herbania, the EBAR Tomas Morales and the EBAR El Charco, in addition to the submarine outfall of Puerto del Rosario.
In Corralejo, the Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) of the RIU Oliva Beach Hotel and the Tres Islas Hotel are authorised, as well as the desalination plant of Suministros de Agua de La Oliva and the desalination plant of Corralejo. It does not have the Poseidon EBAR and the Muelle Chico EBAR, the Port EBAR, the Corralejo submarine outfall, in addition to the spillway of the El Cotillo sanitation network and two drains of two houses and one of a cafeteria in this same town. Nor does the dumping of the Islote de Lobos Interpretation Center, which is not active, have permission.
Protected waters
Most of the discharges are concentrated in the Punta Jandía-Punta del Lago and Punta del Lago-Caleta del Espino water bodies, with 13 points in each. 68 percent of the census points (27) are located outside protected areas, while 32 percent (13 points) are located within a protected area.
Three out of four of these registered discharges are active
Of these 13 discharge points, six are located in the Special Area of Conservation (SAC) Playas de Sotavento de Jandía, three in the SAC Sebadales de Corralejo and four in the Site of Community Importance (SCI) Marine Area of the west and south of Lanzarote-Fuerteventura.
The National Census of Discharges of the General Directorate of Water of the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge must be updated every year with the information provided, in this case, by the Fuerteventura Island Water Council.
Update
The Ministry prepares annual reports with all this information, although it only includes the authorised discharges, while this update from the Government "is based on the work of the cabinet, based on the information in the files of the management centre with competences in the processing of the procedures for authorisation of discharge from land to sea, in this case the General Directorate of Ecological Transition and the Fight against Climate Change".
New discharge points that were not included in the last census carried out are included, their administrative status is updated, material errors are corrected and the points censused in the previous publication are suppressed. The census does not include those pipelines that, although authorized, have not yet been executed.
