51 killed as boat capsizes on its way to the Canary Islands
Share On:
The Helimer 206 helicopter rescued nine people from a boat sinking 111 kilometres south of La Restinga in El Hierro this morning (Monday), as reported by Maritime Rescue to the EFE news agency.

The vessel, measuring between 15and 20 metres in length, was spotted by a tanker en route from Brazil to Cartagena, the Beskidy, which alerted Spanish authorities that it was in a very compromised situation, asit waspartially submerged.

Immediately, Maritime Rescue dispatched their rescue helicopter based in Tenerife, along with two vessels, the Salvamar Adhara, and a patrol boat from the Guardia Civil, to aid in the rescue. The helicopter flew nine survivors to El Hierro to receive initial medical assistance.

Meanwhile, the Salvamar Adhara has been instructed to continue sailing toward the location of the boat to verify that there are no remaining victims onboard, as indicated by reports from the Helimer rescuers.

The survivors told the helicopter crew and medical personnel that they set sail nine days ago bound for the Canary Islands, capsized two days ago, and they are the only ones who managed to turn the boat back over and climb aboard again, despite it being partially submerged.

The survivors, for whom no further details have been disclosed yet, except that they are from sub-Saharan Africa, are being attended to by healthcare professionals and Red Cross personnel at El Hierro airport. So far, ambulances have transported three of them to the island’s hospital.

CAMOUFLAGED Police MOTORCYCLES TO MONITOR MOTORISTS ON CANARY ISLANDS ROADS

Camouflaged Police motorcycles to monitor motorists on Canary Islands roads
Share On:
To increase safety measures for motorcyclists, the Guardia Civil will intensify surveillance using undercover camouflaged motorbikes to monitor motorists on Canary Islands roads, as announced yesterday (Friday) by the Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska.

The safety of motorcyclists ranks among the top priorities for the traffic authorities in Spain (DGT), so, control and surveillance campaigns targeting this group will be intensified on weekends between June and October, the months with a higher presence of motorbikes on the roads.

Camouflaged motorcycles will be deployed on roads in regions with the highest accident rates in Spain, including Andalusia, Valencia, Galicia, the Balearic Islands, and the Canary Islands.

Marlaska explained that 95 new speed radars will be installed and an additional 400,000 breathalyser tests will be available due to the "alarming" 16% increase in road fatalities of motorcyclists recorded in the first quarter of 2024.

Furthermore, the Traffic Department of the Guardia Civil will be reinforced with 150 new agents. This implementation will commence "immediately" as the Directorate General of Traffic (DGT) aims to enhance road safety and reduce the number and severity of accidents.

In the first quarter of 2024, some 261 people were killed on interurban roads, an increase of 36 fatalities compared to the same period last year. Marlaska described this figure as "unacceptable" and alarming, given that usual fluctuations in road accidents typically hover around 5%.

Demographics in the Canary Islands are at two speeds: 99% more in Fuerteventura; 1% more in La Palma
Between 2000 and 2022, the Maxorata has grown from 60,124 inhabitants to 120,021

EFE 0 COMMENTS 30/04/2024 - 13:18
The evolution of demography in the Canary Islands since the turn of the millennium has gone at two speeds, as in Fuerteventura it had grown by 99.62% until 2022, while in La Palma it had barely grown by 1.16%.

Amid the debate on the demographic challenge, the economic model, and the problems of access to housing, and coinciding with the Conference of Presidents of Cabildos, the Canary Islands Institute of Statistics (Istac) has published a tool to visualise population changes disaggregated by islands, municipalities, and regions between 2000 and 2022.

In that period, Fuerteventura has gone from 60,124 inhabitants to 120,021 (99.62%): in municipalities such as Antigua, it has grown by 168.4%, and in La Oliva, by 164.2%.

The second island with the highest population growth was Lanzarote, which in 2000 had 96,310 inhabitants and has risen to 151,112 (62.09%). Yaiza is the second municipality in the Canary Islands that has grown the most in population: from 5,175 to 16,924 (227% more).

The first in Tenerife is Adeje, whose population in 2000 was 14,007 people and two years ago it was 49,270.

El Hierro has gone from having 8,533 residents to 11,423 (33.87%), while Tenerife has become the most populated island in the archipelago: from 709,365 to 931,646 (31.34%).

Gran Canaria has gone from having 741,161 people registered to 853,262 (15.13%), a growth lower than that of another of the so-called green islands, La Gomera, which went from having 18,300 inhabitants in 2000 to 21,798 in 2022 (19.11%).

Finally, there is La Palma, whose population has barely grown by 1.16%: from 82,483 registered people it has gone to 83,439.

If we focus on the regions, we can see that there are different rhythms on the same island: in Tenerife, the south, Abona, and Southwest, where most of the tourist activity is concentrated, have grown by 134.1% and 117.4%, respectively, while that of Daute (Garachico, El Tanque, Los Silos, and Buenavista del Norte) has decreased by 8.4%.

The same happens in Gran Canaria, where the southeast and southwest regions have grown by 53.5% and 38%, and the west has decreased by 15%, especially in Tejeda (-29.3%) and Artenara (-34.5%), not so much in La Aldea (-6.6%).

The other region where the most population has been lost is the northeast of La Palma, 12.4%, with Barlovento and San Andrés y Sauces as the municipalities most affected by the so-called 'demographic winter', with falls of 20.9% and 20.3%.

However, in La Palma, the municipality that has lost the most population since the turn of the millennium is Tazacorte, specifically 26.8%.

There is also a demographic disparity in La Gomera, as Hermigua has lost 15.8% of its population and Alajeró has increased by 51.1%.

In El Hierro, the census population has increased by 40.7% in Valverde.

Where there are hardly any contrasts, is in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura: the population increases in all the regions, more pronounced in the southwest, in the case of the island of Conejera, and in the center of the island of Fuerteventura.

The work to improve access to the Costa Antigua Industrial Estate is completed

Access to the Costa Antigua Industrial Estate | Google Street View
The Department of Infrastructure, Roads, Planning, and Municipal Cooperation of the Cabildo de Fuerteventura reports the completion of the minor work to improve access to the Costa Antigua Industrial Estate on the FV-2 road.

The work has consisted of widening the platform to accommodate the different lanes and improving the access junction to the industrial estate through direct access and/or exit lanes that will allow greater fluidity of traffic at the junction.

According to what is reported from the Island Council, with the paving and vertical signage work, the minor work is almost completed pending only signage finishing work.

Both the president of the Cabildo, Lola García and the councilor of the area, Blas Acosta, underline the continuous commitment of the island Corporation to improve road infrastructure and guarantee its safety, in this case with a work that will improve mobility in this area.

John:- And despite my great misgivings it is working well.
