Near drowning at Cofete

A 34-year-old rescued in critical condition in Cofete.
About 2:07 p.m. this afternoon a 34-year-old man of German origin who, at the first moment of assistance, shows signs of drowning and is in cardiorespiratory arrest, transferred in the medicalizedhelicopter of the SUC to the Insular University Hospital of Gran Canaria.

 

At the time indicated above, the Emergency and Security Coordination Center (CECOES) 1-1-2 of the Government of the Canary Islands received an alert informing that several bathers had rescued from the sea a young man unconscious and with signs of drowning.

 

1-1-2 immediately activated the necessary emergency resources.

 

Among the bathers on the beach was a doctor who found that the affected person was in cardiorespiratory arrest and began to practice basic resuscitation maneuvers until the arrival of the SUC team.

 
The health personnel of the SUC, upon arrival, continued with the basic and advanced resuscitation maneuvers managing to reverse the stop and, after stabilizing the affected, proceeded to transfer him to the hospital in Gran Canaria where he arrived in critical condition.

The waters do need real care at the moment. 

We were on Piedra Playa South of El Cotillo, at the end of the beach today. It's a stretch of beach and water we know well, but the waves changed quite suddenly with a real pull out to sea. We made a quick exit.

Knowing what to do gives the best chance of survival! Rips can form very suddenly, even in shallow water - don't fight them!

It’s great to look at clips on YouTube showing how to get out of a rip but in reality when you’re being taken out against your will you instinctively try to swim towards shore. This leads to panic and increases the chances of swallowing water, which is basically good night Vienna. I’ve been caught in rips, once in Australia once on Cotillo and again on Tindaya beach. I’m a strong swimmer and know what to look out for but these things can happen out of the blue. It’s terrifying and trying not to panic is difficult but it’s true, let it take you and hope you get dumped back into shore once you reach an area where the waves are breaking again. This chap was lucky there was a Doctor on the beach to give CPR.

The young German rescued from drowning in Cofete dies.

The young German tourist rescued from the sea on the beach of Cofete a week ago, and who was transferred to the University Hospital of Gran Canaria in critical condition, would have died when he did not recover from the aftermath of drowning.

 

The young man was rescued in a state of the sea on the beach of Cofete by some bathers and had been attended by a doctor who was in the area and did the first aid maneuvers.

 
Later the helicopter of the 112 transferred the young German of 34 years to Gran Canaria, but could not recover. Great caution is recommended when bathing on the island during these days, as there is a lot of sea in the background, especially to the north and west of the island.
