Shops & supermarkets under lockdown!

So does that mean if you don’t have residencia card you don’t get masks ? Wonder what the people who were “trapped” on the island do 🤔🤔

Hi Ron, a couple of weeks ago I saw JohnR had been to get facemasks and I think he mentioned having to produce his medical card, so yesterday when asked for ID I produced our residencia cards which were quite acceptable.  Not sure if your passport supported by a copy of your NIE would do.

Re the price I got 10 for 9€ so 0.90€ each.

I assume if you have residencia you don`t pay more than 1 euro, if you don`t I think you can get a mask but it might cost more.

We're non-resident, and will probably need to pick some up next week, so will update afterwards if someone else hasn't done so already.

Got 2 blue masks at the Campanario Pharmacy last week 90 c.each. This week same place, 2 new version stiff white masks offered to me. They know me & that I am resident, so they did not ask me for proof?.
They are an improvement on the originals. it seems there is no shortage now.

The Farmacia, near Just4 in Caleta, said this morning that they can only sell 1 mask per person every 3 days.  It's the first time that we have bought them. 90c for a blue one.

I thought I might add my experience to the face mask debate.
Last Tuesday, I went to the farmacia in Caleta (the one near the Barcello) and was told they could not sell me a face mask as I am not registered for an NIE.  I am a tourist!  They would not accept my UK driving license as I.D.  They will sell only to bona fide Residents.   I explained I was a tourist awaiting repatriation,  but no joy.  Left a bit of a sour taste that lives of tourist don't count.  I ended up making one from a hotel pillowcase (needs must) with a kitchen paper towel filter......

Try the one on Av. Alcalde Juan Ramón Soto Morales, 2 streets away same street as Fado Rock, much more obliging people.

Same here geordie. Today my other half went into Corralejo today to do jobs which need doing get Money, items from shops we can`t get & masks. We are house owners so pay all local taxes, we also pay non resident tax each year, buy items for house so pay local taxes on those. So it seems a bit mean that people who are not regular tourists but contribute to the local economy are penalised when buying a mask. Having said that we purchased some masks to make sure eventually when flights are made that we have "official" masks so that we can get to airport & on plane when flights do restart., although I have read that masks will be handed out at transport hubs but better safe than sorry. Meanwhile we have made home made masks for the rest of the time we have on the island before we can depart. Masks cost 3 euros 90 cents each at Pharmacy at Campanario for the new type.

Seems a bit daft as masks we have been told stop you from spreading the virus, so the Canarians are taking a risk that we don`t have it & without masks we will continue to spread it. Logic of the mad house.

Tindaya to Corralejo today, 11am - 2pm.

Driving through Villaverde I saw there was no queue at HiperDino so I did a quick U-turn and went in to get preferred variety of apples (not stocked at Mercadona). This is the first time that there hasn't been a queue when I was there in the whole of lock down.

Into Corralejo and down the High Street. I passed one Policia Local going the opposite way just outside the town and the a GC car followed me down the High Street. They ignored me parking in the empty taxi rank. Wanted to use the ATM at Sabadell, well, you've heard the term 'hole in the wall', that's just what it was!

There were about 20 people outside waiting to go inside - I'll go back another day.

Through the back streets to see if Popelins (material shop) was open. Big queue outside but I think it was for the fruit and veg shop next door, perhaps it's next week the fabric shops can open (material & elastic for masks). Drove round a couple of streets to take a few pics.

The wind turbines weren't working.

Drove back up the big outside road hoping to go in Marcial's. The queue was horrendous so I gave that a miss as well. Further up as I got near the new petrol station I happened to notice that the door of La Hondura ferreteria was open - first time I've seen it since lockdown - another quick change of direction, parked right outside, no queue and they had what I wanted, result!

Up to Mercadona, no queue, sanitary procedures slightly changed, you now help yourself to gel from a container on the wall however the push button was so stiff I couldn't work it, had to get the security guard to push it for me! Help yourself to gloves. You only use trolleys from inside, they have already been sanitised. Their stock availability and levels seem to have settled at a 'new norm'. I can see myself getting heartily sick of that phrase very quickly!

Overall there were a lot more people out and about today, mainly with children, although thankfully not in the supermarket. More cars on the road as well. Lots of people waiting at bus stops, most with masks on.

Attempting Ideal in Puerto tomorrow. Anyone know what time they are closing at the moment?

Visited Lidl and Mercadona outside of Caleta today, and like Tamara said, it's very much a case of the "new normal"— very little has changed in the shops in the last two weeks. (Outside is a different story: much busier on the streets, with lots of "exercisers" biking and walking. There was a noticeably reduced Police presence, and less of that abandoned, alien, other-world feeling.) Decent stock of most things (though no bananas or small oranges in Mercadona). Lidl was MUCH busier than usual; Mercadona slightly so. Not nearly enough people wearing masks— it seems like there are fewer people wearing them now than before they were readily available for sale!  Big Grin

Question: does anyone know what the sign outside of Mercadona says? It's posted after the shopping trolleys on the inner/second door. It said something "prohibido" but I did not want to cause an obstruction standing to take a pic and/or struggling through it in my limited Spanish. Is it about having more than one person inside, or something else?
