The possibility of subsidizing fuel in Fuerteventura and Lanzarote has the handicap of being visited by many tourists that should be taken out of the equation.
The Government of the Canary Islands is analysing whether a possible fuel rebate in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, the application of which is being studied after it has been introduced generally in the green islands, should also apply to rental cars or only to residents in the case of the eastern islands.
The Minister of Finance, Matielde Asián, responded in the plenary session of Parliament to an interpellation by PSOE deputy Manuel Hernández Cerezo, who accused the executive of discriminating against the citizens of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura by applying this bonus only in three of the five non-capital islands, creating "a third insularity".
Hernández Cerezo said that the citizens of the eastern islands are paying for the most expensive fuel in the Canary Islands in the face of the government's inaction, which generates comparative grievances between the different non-capital islands, and proposed that at least 40% of the bonus received by La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro be applied.
He criticised the fact that, in the face of this difference in treatment, the government has limited itself to announcing the creation of a price observatory and a study on the evolution of the fuel market in the two eastern islands.
In addition, he denounced the mismanagement of the 20 cents per liter bonus in the green islands, because on the same day it came into force, April 1, prices rose by ten cents, so that "in the best of cases" that bonus has remained at ten cents.
"They maintain grievances in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura and at the same time they cannot ensure the correct application of the bonus in the green islands," said the PSOE deputy.
The minister replied that the fuel rebate in the green islands is temporary and transitory, a "test bed" from April 1 to December 31 whose objective is a reduction in the final price to the consumer, and if this finally does not occur, another mechanism will be sought.

Market research
In the case of Fuerteventura and Lanzarote, a study of the market is being carried out and depending on its result, an equivalent treatment will be applied to La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro.
"The treatment will be the same and we want to do it well", but there is a fundamental difference and that is the weight of tourist car rental in the eastern islands.
The minister said that the government agrees with a reduction in the price for residents, but is evaluating whether discounts on gasoline should also be applied to tourists when on the other hand they want to put a tax on them per stay.
"We are doing serious work to protect the citizens of Fuerteventura and Lanzarote to introduce evidence-based corrective measures and for that we have to study market conditions," he insisted.
