The investment, of 7.4 million euros, will also improve and expand existing resources on other islands

The Council of Ministers has approved the investment, by the emergency procedure, of 7.4 million euros for the construction of two temporary care centers for foreigners (CATE) in Fuerteventura, with 600 places, and in Adeje (Tenerife), with 350.

The CATE of Adeje will consist of a modular facility that will be located on land belonging to the Ministry of the Interior, the Government details in a statement.

In addition, with the approved budget item, the services and supplies of the CATE of Lanzarote, El Hierro and Gran Canaria will be reinforced, improved and expanded with the aim of being able to assist and attend to all the people who arrive in the Canary Islands.

The Government stresses that the ordinary mechanisms provided for in Law 9/2017, of 8 November, do not allow a response to the situation "with the immediacy that is required" for the contracting of the necessary works, supplies and services.

For this reason, the Secretary of State for Security, by Resolution of 18 September 2024, has declared their recruitment to be an emergency, in accordance with the provisions of Article 120 of the aforementioned legal text.
