The scientists consulted by the Security and Emergencies Directorate, a center attached to the Ministry of Public Administrations, Justice and Security , directed by Julio Pérez, attribute for now the origin of the sonic boom heard this afternoon, mostly in Gran Canaria, to the passage of a A fireball that has crossed the sky of the Canary Islands and has touched the atmosphere on this island, generating a powerful acoustic wave.
An investigation was opened from 1-1-2 after having previously received several calls in the operating room of 1-1-2 in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, coming from the south of Tenerife, the island of La Gomera and La Palma, in the who reported, on the one hand, having seen a ray of green and red light that crossed the sky and, on the other, a trail of smoke in the direction of Gran Canaria. The calls from the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife were followed by more than 40, originating from the island of Gran Canaria, reporting the sonic boom.
Based on these data, from the Canary Islands Astrophysics Institute (IAC) it has been considered very probable that the noise was caused by the passage of a fireball that has crossed the sky of the Canary Islands and that has touched the atmosphere at the height of Gran Canary. The IAC has not ruled out that, having heard and felt the vibration, the fireball could have touched the earth in small fractions. For now, it has been ruled out that the explosion was caused by a jet plane, a seismic movement, any type of explosion due to some activity or that it had led to a fire.
On the other hand, from the Canary Islands Seismic Network operated by the Canary Islands Volcanological Institute (Involcan) it has been reported that at 4:35 p.m. a seismic signal was recorded in Gran Canaria, caused by the passage of a powerful acoustic wave through the island. According to Involcan, the preliminary analysis of the seismograms shows a shape compatible with an N-wave , produced by the impact on the ground of a shock wave caused by a natural or artificial object moving through the atmosphere at supersonic speed.
Also from the National Geological Institute (IGN), it has been ruled out that the noise felt mostly on the island of Gran Canaria had its origin in a seismic movement.

It must be remembered that an
Earthquake and a fireball, despite their different nature, cause geophysical phenomena that can be treated with the same analysis techniques. These phenomena are the generation of mechanical waves that propagate through continuous media and not necessarily due to an impact with the ground.
During the afternoon, the situation was permanently monitored by the Government, with direct communication with the President of the Canary Islands, Ángel Víctor Torres, and the counselor Julio Pérez, not being necessary to activate any of the emergency plans.
