Most of the big supermarkets have a fresh fish counter and, IMO, they look better and are far more used than in the UK.

Plus there's the white shed with blue doors next to the cafe down near the ferry termina, which I think is a sort of fish market, but I have no idea what its opening hours are

We buy excellent fish from Mercadonna and HiperDino. The fish mongers in Hiper's in the Campernario are extremely helpfull and have advised me how to cook many different variaties of fish that we haven't tried before. Hairybiker's right, the Spanish love their fish and the fish counters are always full of lovely fresh fish.

You lucky lady. What does he catch and where? Does he ever catch mackerel? Our favourite fish but havent't seen it in Fuerte. We live on the coast here in the U.K. and buy locally caught fish, crab and lobster off the harbour. You can't beat it.

He does both sea fishing and shore fishing (not from the beach but rocky area near Las Salinas).  He has caught mackerel in the past but a few years ago the breeding areas for them were decimated by a huge fishing trawler, and they are thin on the ground now. He has caught just about everything you are allowed to catch and keep, big and small.

Mackerel ( Caballa in Spanish)  is available in Mercadona on a regular basis at least in Caleta.

Just for the record, private fisherman are not allowed to sell their catch ( huge fines if caught doing so to both buyer and seller!)- only commercial fisherman can do that.
