Anyone know what they are? I had one that was hanging around my porch more and more. It looked like it was building a nest and I thought it would be best to remove the nest before a bunch of other wasps come by and take up residence. Up the ladder I go and use a utility knife to slice off this thing that's the size of an avocado stone... Bad Idea... Out of it exploded about 20 caterpillars, all over me. I had tried to research the wasp before but got it confused with another type and thought I was taking precautions. When searching again but this time including "caterpillar" into the search, I discovered these belong to the family known as potter wasps/mud dauber as Miles and Perry said. Generally solo, and generally not aggressive. Since cutting down that first nest, they have been back in several places in the garden. Now they seem to have selected someone out of my way so I just leave them.

I got outside and 3 hours later it hasn't flown away, ants were attacking it. Looks very much like a thing in Texas that we called a tree roach. But, of course, the Texas one was WAAAYYYYYY bigger
