padron register have

Do I have to register for Padron
#1
Like many others, I was registered on the padron & had my registration struck off.

I am a UK citizen with a property on the island. Have paid all my bills from the Ayuntamiento for years by direct debit from La Caixia.

I went to re-register a few weeks ago before my return to the UK. I was informed that as I was no longer on their system, I would need to re-register. As I do not have a TIE, they said I would need the original deeds to register. I informed them these were in the UK, so I would have to wait till my return in September to register.

I was a bit annoyed that they struck people off without notification, but having owned since 2005 I should really know better than to expect any notice of important changes.

Not only that, but I know that the Ayuntamiento get more funds depending on the number of people register on the padron, so I understand the benefit to them of encouraging people to get on the padron. What advantage is it to me being on the padron?

What happens if I don't register?

Is it a legal requirement to be on the Padron?

Have others not been on the padron & had a property & are UK citizens without a TIE or residencia without any repercussions?

There is currently a warning from CAB Es on Facebook to have your self removed if you are non resident, II will go and see what I can glean from it and come back

As far as I am aware, the Padron is for those living here, so it is part of the process for residents.  However, there may be some issues ahead for you with things like: buying a car, getting services such as the Internet installed, getting a Spanish mobile phone on contract.

As you are now not here as often as you could have been before Brexit, these might not be issues for you, but I do know some non-resident Brits who own cars (as an example) and they MIGHT have an issue when they want to purchase another car.

Sorry, not a complete answer, but is based on the information given in your post so I've had to make various assumptions.

I registered before taking out residency, on the basis that La Olivia were encouraging us to register to get more funding (funding was based on size of the Padron), perhaps that funding formula has changed or perhaps it only applies to EU non-residents.  I'm not sure, but I will be trying to bottom it out for future use.

Tom.

From Cab Es wab site

Important! Holiday home owners and nonresidents who registered on the padrón. Please remove your names from the register [Image: 2b07.png]

It relates to whether you can drive here I think if you are on he Padron the Police will consider you a resident, but it might be worth you looking at their website yourself

Thanks Tom for the reply.

I already have a car, so that will have to last me longer if I can't purchase one if anything happens in the future.

Just got rid of Movistar internet & moved to internet via mast, which was simple to arrange with a private company.

Only here for 3 month blocks or less, hopefully if I stay off padron & problems occur I'll just have to sell up. We have had our place since 2005 so maybe time to part if there are too many obstacles.

Well that's one reason to be off Padron as I do have a car.

I assume if I was on Padron & was driving, they would expect me to be driving on a Spanish license.

Thanks for the heads up about CAB es lots of answers to the questions I have.

Seems like my gut feeling about not renewing my registration as a non resident is correct.

This Padron situation is all getting a bit strange.
It all flies in the face of what we were led to believe in the Past.and what is stated on HMG website.
I have been actively persuading non resident acquaintances to go on the 'Padron" as I believed it meant more Money for the community.
Henceforth I shall remain stum.
Be interesting if young Tom can elicit anything concrete.

I empathise with your feelings regarding the padron situation & informing others in the past to register for the padron.

I would be interested in a link to the HMG website to read the advice the UK government gave. This information may have been correct when we were EU citizens, however as we are now not in the EU our status has changed. For instance, the tax as a non-resident owner will increase, the capital gains tax will increase on selling a property. I would imagine with so many civil servants not returning to their offices lots of information that needs to be updated is still in abeyance.

My biggest concern is that if I am on the padron if the Guardia stop me when driving & expect me to have a Spanish driving licence there may be problems. From my contact with the Guardia, you can not argue your case. There may be other issues which will crop up as time goes by if we are either on or off the padron.
