Driving in Fuerteventura for UK drivers after Brexit

Just in case .……… I'm going to attempt to get one for myself soon as I'll be using a hire car in the UK early in the summer, I'll let you know how I get on at Trafico!

Just found this courtesy of CAB Spain so I have cancelled my appointment at Trafico tomorrow. I had hoped this would be the case but I didn't trust it to be sorted this promptly.

Info from the UK Government, dated 1.2.2019
EU drivers visiting or living in the UK after EU Exit
From 29 March 2019, in the event that there is no EU Exit deal, arrangements for EU licence holders who are visiting or living in the UK WILL NOT CHANGE.
Visitors with EU driving licences will not need an International Driving Permit to drive in the UK, a valid driving licence is sufficient.

Hello Tamara
Have you had any recent experience of hiring in UK with a Spanish Licence?
The UK Gov website still says the same as you quoted so no problem with driving a private car in the UK BUT
some hire companies wanting an IDP.
Bit of a nuisance.
Thanks

Nuisance in deed. EU driving licence should be enough to rent a car anywhere in the UK. The same rules apply for accepting UK driving licence in any other EU country. Using a competitor if they become difficult about it would be my fist move.  Huh

Sam I think if Brexit goes ahead with no deal an IDP will be needed either way, UK to Spain and Spain to UK I have them ready just in case. Make sure you get the right one.

When we went o South Africa in January we had our IDP's but the hire company didn't ask to see them nor did the hire company there or here on Fuerteventura as to see the licence check code.

Hope that helps.

I have a hire car booked for late Oct - early Nov in the UK. Nothing in my T & Cs about needing IDP, their website says not needed if UK passport and Spanish licence. As I am there over the potential 'B date' I'll ask the Q once I have got my hands on my rental keys!  Wink

(Nothing said when I hired from them in July and they know I'm a regular customer.)

Picked up my hire car at Gatwick this morning. My hire dates go past the proposed Brexit date. The only difference to previously was that they asked to see evidence of my return flight out of the country!
