Gardening in Fuerteventura

Now that Lockdown is being eased, I would like to start to put some effort into our garden area.
We will need all the usual stuff as currently there's only volcanic stones.

Can someone recommend a garden center ideally in the north of the island with a good selection of things?
Also I will try to go through all these posts to see what can be grown here, but so far we're looking for some anti-fly stuffs, herbs, some veggies and maybe a few succulents.

The only place that I would recommend is Happy Plants at Tefia. Everything they sell has been tried and tested on the island. You can get lots of nice stuff at Oasis garden centre just outside Puerto but a lot of their stuff are imports that soon give up in our climate. If you know what you're getting their plants are fine but easy to get deceived thinking if they sell it it will grow - not so!
Baba has a garden centre in Corralejo opposite the Football stadium, didn't seem to be open today when I went past. He seems to have less and less stock each time I pop in (pre COVID), some bits I've bought there were OK, but a lot seems uncared for.
Back to my original statement, for good quality plants that stand a good chance of surviving go to Happy Plants. Saskia and Paul give brilliant advice on what is suitable for your neck of the woods. I'm not sure of their current opening plans but under normal circumstances I can spend a couple of hours just wandering around looking at everything. They have a lot planted in the ground which gives a better idea of what you are letting yourself in for. Also sell nice pots and various Dutch substrates. They can be found on Facebook, which I don't do very often, Saskia said she would update that with opening details.

A bit of an update from our Garden

The Strelitzia - Bird of Paradise has started to flower a a number of flower stems still to bloom.

   

The hibiscus that I cut back to deal with the bug infestation are shooting nicely, will have to do some pinching out of stems not wanted.

   

The Metzosideros has filled out nicely in shape and is starting to flower.

   

And finally a small Cacti in a trough has flowered with the most amazing bloom

     


All oue plants come from Happy Plants so we do highly recommend going there as the advice Paul & Saskia give is second to none.

I agree, Happy Plants are always very helpful. I have emailed pictures of 'sick plants' in the past and they have sent useful advice.

Delighted to see the first blooms on a young tree I bought from Happy Plants last year. I can't remember it's name    - I call it Fuerte Wisteria - next time I see Saskia I'll ask her, again!



And visiting a friend this afternoon I took a pic of her Parkinsonia in full bloom:



I've posted a pic of this tree before but couldn't remember it's name - today I remembered to use the PlantNet app on my phone and it found it immediately for me! (Didn't work for my Fuerte Wisteria, prob because the tree doesn't have 'shape' yet.)

I visited Happy Plants on saturday and it was an amazing experience.
We only bought a few smaller things but its enough for us to get started with a little Cactus garden and a Herb Garden.

Yesterday was perfect Weather for planting, but I discovered there's over 20cm of the volcanic stones covering the earth here.
Does anyone have any suggestions where I can get some cheap dirt/earth?

I have 4 bags of Happy Mix from Happy Plants, but if I really want to fill these holes I would need about 10 more

Was thinking to go to Ideal in PDR and get whatever cheapest compost they have.

The Garden Centre on the PDR ring road had compost in varying size bags, may be worth calling there first.
