And there's still so many cars passing by with a Goldcar sticker on them. I guess, they must do something right, just not sure what it is.

I think its their habit of showing very low prices on the web site that attracts punters who know no better.

I think it’s because some people hire cars through airline websites, or carhire.com, or even Booking.com and because it’s paid up front they have no choice than to go with them, not sure that you he majority of hirers actually research car hire before they hire, and as was previously said LOW PRICES

I nearly always rent a car on each visit so that’s 4 times a year by about 15 years, so that’s 60, I would say it’s probably more like 50, but here are my preferences based on experience 
1. Autoplus - Pluscar 
2. Payless.es - Make Sure it is NOT Payless.com as this is a totally different site
3. Cabrerra Medina or CI Cars.

I had the experience of a Goldcar rental once, NEVER AGAIN.

I’ve been visiting the island since about 1993, hence my username if anyone remembers that establishment!! and I’ve used most of the hire car companies but without a doubt the best one at the moment is Auto Reisen- good price, no deposit, super service - I was parked overnight in Caleta  and someone ran into my car causing damage - I rang Auto Reisen and they replaced the car within half an hour, no charge, no excess, no subsequent charge on my credit card - they are the best at the moment.

Welcome to the forum Pub the Shack.

We used TopCar Autorisen before the split and had a zero excess in the contract. A bit later (after the split) TopCar asked for a deposit or paying for the extra insurance. It wasn't much and we've caved, rather than letting them to lock the deposit. This few euros made us to move our custom elsewhere and we never looked back at neither of them.

Does Autorisen have a free, zero excess cover, including the price?

Like Sam we used Top Car until they split and started charging much higher deposits and their customer service also went down so moved to PlusCar and on the 3 occasions so far they have been excellent including changing the car for a larger one for 3 days when we had friends over so PlusCar  gets my vote.

I always use PlusCar, they're just so convenient and such good value.  Never had a problem with the cars themselves, but I had a puncture once and PlusCar just swapped the car.
