I am glad you had a good experience, A&E is very hit and miss in the Puerto Rosario Hospital but other departments seem to get good reviews. The NHS is in such a state that things can't look that bad out here can they Smile

If you live down south there are absolutely no facilities, Pajara has 20,000 people who pay in to the Spanish health service but there is not a single x-ray machine and they have about one ultrasound, a&e comprises of a room and a single doctor. They essentially just offer 3 GP offices and apart from that you can just wait for an ambulance (maybe 4 hours?) or probably best just to call a taxi to Puerto instead..... you know if your life is at risk Sick

There was about a 10 year peiod where the government had EU Money to build a hospital in the south and they forfeited that when they couldn't get their act together to do anything in a decade!

From Radio Sintonia:

The care pressure in the ICU determines that the Hospital of Fuerteventura activates the first phase of the Contingency Plan against COVID-19. In this sense, the Ministry of Health of the Government of the Canary Islandshas reported today, who recalls that it has been prepared by the Management of Health Services to meet the demand for care in the face of the pandemic situation on the island.

Health points out that all hospitals in the Canary Islands prepared their contingency plans before last summer with the aim of being prepared for spikes in infections and admissions in the environment of the pandemic. In this case of Fuerteventura, in recent weeks the island has experienced an increase in hospital pressure that has led to the activation of this plan in order to guarantee quality care to all patients.
Intensive Care Unit
In this sense, it should be remembered that the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) has 10 beds that, so far, have responded to the cases that have occurred on the island, both of critical patients affected by COVID-19 and other ailments. Currently, of the four patients affected by COVID-19 hospitalized at the center, three are in the ICU. This circumstance, together with the excess of critical occupation due to cause not related to COVID, has led to the activation of the first phase of the Contingency Plan, which marks an ICU occupancy greater than or equal to 8 beds.
Reconfiguration of hospital areas
The measures included in the Plan foresee the reconfiguration and disposition of several areas of the center for the care of critical patients. In this way, and once 8 beds of the traditional ICU of the center were occupied, these resources would be activated, as has happened in other hospitals of the Islands.
The Hospital of Fuerteventura has planned three more beds in the Post-Surgical Resuscitation Unit (REA) for the care of critical patients. In addition, as provided for in the Contingency Plan, there are four individual isolation rooms. These positions will be able to accommodate critical patients in the new hospitalization plant of Internal Medicine, being able to cover, if necessary, up to six positions.
The Manager of Health Services of Fuerteventura, José Luis Rodríguez Cubas, explains that the measures foreseen in the different phases of the Contingency Plan are designed to guarantee the care response in case of an increase in demand and hospital admissions to face the pandemic situation on the island. It also details that initially the attention to critical patients affected by COVID is centralized in the ICU, but the center has planned sufficient resources, spaces and equipment to guarantee care if the capacity of this unit is exceeded.

The Minister of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands, Blas Trujillo, reported today in the Parliamentary Committee that the new Radiation Oncology Unit of the General Hospital of Fuerteventura will become operational, if the planned schedule is met, in the second quarter of 2022.
It is estimated that during the second half of December, after the approval of the relevant permits, the installation of the accelerator will begin, this work will last approximately one month. From this moment, the calibration of the equipment will begin, which entails an average time of two to four months, which could be extended up to five months depending on the availability of specialists in Medical Physics.
The expected start date of this service is set for the second quarter of 2022, a date that will be conditioned to the availability of specialized personnel, medical physicists and radiotherapy technicians.
Approximately 120 patients a year will receive comprehensive treatment in the new Radiation Oncology Unit of Fuerteventura, which represents 80% of cancer patients on the island. The rest, depending on the type of process or the need for specific equipment and a very high level of specialization, will continue to be attended to at the reference center.
It was last August when the General Directorate of Economic Resources of the SCS formalized the contract for the acquisition, installation and maintenance of radiation oncology equipment, for an amount of 4,302,150 euros, for which the installation authorization has been requested from the Nuclear Safety Council (CSN).

The Management of Health Services of the Health Area of Fuerteventura, attached to the Ministry of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands, has expanded the endowment of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the General Hospital of Fuerteventura with a new box for the care of patients in critical condition.
This new box, equipped with highly specialized equipment, represents an increase to 11 of the number of critical hospitalization beds in the hospital center, thus maximizing the necessary coverage in situations of overoccupation, such as those that could arise from the current health emergency associated with the COVID-19 pandemic.
As for the equipment, it has a large work surface and is equipped with a lock and negative/positive pressure, which optimizes the care of those patients who require isolation, preserving the safety of professionals.
The new box incorporates a supply headboard suspended from the ceiling for the provision of medical gases, electricity and data, and has a patient crane system, both elements intended to facilitate a functional, safe and adapted to the performance of professionals.
Likewise, the functionality of these new ICU posts allows the integration of the endowment, so as to ensure the greatest possible comfort, the arrangement of the equipment around the patient and accessibility to it from all points.
The director of the Health Area of Fuerteventura, Sandra Celis, highlights the improvement in care implied by the incorporation of this new box, thus expanding the icu endowment of the Majorero hospital center, which also allows to guarantee a better response to situations of overoccupation derived from the COVID-19 pandemic.
The manager of Health Services of Fuerteventura, José Luís Rodríguez, explains that with this increase in endowment, the ICU of the hospital center responds to the document of 'Standards and Recommendations of Intensive Care Units', published by the Ministry of Health, since of the 11 available boxes, four meet isolation conditions. It also recalls that this document establishes that "from the point of view of care, the most appropriate dimension of the ICU is between eight and 12 beds, considering the need to have a room with positive pressure and another with negative pressure, depending on the population assisted".
