The CAAF expects that the water supply in the municipality of Antigua will be restored throughout this weekend.
The Water Supply Consortium of Fuerteventura (CAAF) has reported today, Friday, April 14, that it is estimated that throughout the weekend the water supply in the municipality of Antigua will be restored to normal, after the work of investigation and repair of the damages detected by the staff of the Consortium.
'Mannihilation by unauthorized personnel and outside the FNCS'
As reported by the technicians of the Consortium, the situation suffered by this area of the island responds to an interruption of the injection of water to main tanks, such as those of Ampuyenta, Antigua or Agua de Bueyes, as well as the overflow of the deposit located in Casillas.
"The Service had been investigating for days what had happened," the president said. An investigation that has culminated in the detection, by the technicians, that there had been a "manipulation by unauthorized personnel and outside the CAAF", specifies the Service, of interconnection valves of the water supply transport network with the tanks.
This circumstance has caused that "while filling a tank that was out of service for decades, the water did not reach the supply distribution tanks to citizens," explained the Minister of Water and island vice president, Juan Nicolás Cabrera.
Specifically, the service refers that, after touring different distribution networks and transmission networks in the Betancuria area, it was possible to verify that a manipulation of the interconnection valves of the transmission network with the Casillas deposit, which "should be closed" as this deposit is "out of service for decades".
That is why, according to the conclusions reached by the professionals of the Service, this situation, which is already being reversed and is expected to be restored throughout the weekend, has been responsible for the fault detected in the general network and the emptying of the supply tanks to Betancuria.

A new water cut will considerably affect the supply of Antigua, Puerto del Rosario or Tuineje.
The Fuerteventura Water Supply Consortium (CAAF) has scheduled a supply cut next Tuesday, April 25, starting at 7:00 am, with the aim of solving the incidents detected in the impulsion network, which flows from the desalination plant of Puerto del Rosario to the main deposit of La Herradura.
In that sense, the spokespersons of the CAAF have reported that it is "a necessary repair to improve facilities that present a remarkable fragility due to their obsolescence".
The last fault in this drive line that occurred was repaired in less than 24 hours. However, given the continuation of water loss in the area close to the repair, it is reported that it is necessary to recover these works in order to solve the situation before the summer season.
It is expected that the scheduled repair cut will significantly affect the normalized supply of municipalities such as Antigua, Puerto del Rosario or Tuineje. For this reason, the CAAF and the Cabildo de Fuerteventura regret the possible inconvenience caused and remember that the services continue to work continuously to improve the supply of drinking water throughout the island territory.

Lloret says it will redouble its efforts "to immediately solve the water problem".
The president of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, Sergio Lloret, together with the mayor of the City Council of Pájara, Pedro Armas, attended yesterday a demonstration in La Lajita, where neighbors asked for solutions to the water cuts that have been occurring in the area during the last months. Both the president and the mayor wanted to be present at the rally to convey to the people that "they understand their discomfort, because it is a very critical situation that we are experiencing."
During the meeting, there were some exchanges of words between neighbors and public representatives, in which Lloret took the opportunity to apologize to the population. "First of all, I apologize to all the neighbors who are being affected, but we ask for just a little more patience because we are doing everything in our power, both medium-term and immediate actions, to alleviate the effects that are currently occurring."
Likewise, the president of AMF and mayor of Pájara, Pedro Armas, joined the apologies and remarked that "it is a problem that we have found and to which we are looking for solutions. We really understand their situation and I would go house to house to apologize to them, but instead, we are executing actions that will get the water to their taps as soon as possible."
From the Cabildo, "the three projects of insular interest that will solve the problem are already being contracted, not only for today's Fuerteventura, but for the next generation. Among them, there is the new desalination plant in the southern region that, with an investment of around 80 million euros, will serve to supply water to the entire southern part of the island. In addition, we are completing the works of the expansion of the salt plant of Puerto Rosario, "says Sergio Lloret.
As for the solutions to solve the problem immediately, "emergency actions are already underway, which include injections of flows from third parties, from Oasis Wildlife and the desalination plant of the Gran Tarajal ravine. In addition, this week we will award, by emergency, a new impulsion from the plant of the CAAF network, which will inject 700 more complementary cubic meters to the south and work is being done to increase the flow that is being injected from the Oasis Wildlife base plant. On the other hand, we are in contact with water from Salinas to be able to inject into the network 2000 m3 of surplus that the plant has over those authorized". With these immediate actions, which "will be a matter of 15 days to 1 month" it is intended to solve the immediate water problem that Fuerteventura is suffering.
Given the situation, the president clarifies that "we understand the harsh reality and the limit situation of the neighbors but this is a consequence of the fact that areas such as La Lajita, Tarajalejo, Cardón or Tesejerague, are 70 km from the Puerto del Rosario desalination plant. Without it serving as an excuse, at no time have we refused to give explanations and we have always said clearly that this is not an unforeseen problem that has arisen overnight, for 20 years it was known that this was going to happen. "
In that sense, President Lloret appealed that "the problem has been in those who had the responsibility and the obligation to implement these actions to solve this problem and did not do it. Now it has been getting worse year after year, as we have seen, until reaching this limit situation. Fortunately, the comprehensive plan that had been requested for more than a decade, which was necessary to alleviate the situation, has been put in place. The plan is already defined, approved and processing all the works that must be contracted to resolve this situation as soon as possible. "
"Fuerteventura cannot be without water. Water is an essential element for life and for the island to move forward. In that sense, we assume the commitment and responsibility to solve the problem, which is part of the list of so many others that we have been solving in recent years and that no one was able to do in more than 20, "said Lloret.
So far, it is estimated that the actions that have been executed from the Cabildo, and that are currently underway, are an investment that will exceed 230 million euros. The objective is to continue with the improvement of the Insular Water Supply Network of both the North Region and the South Region and the Central Zone of the Island.

Budgetary measures to try to solve the water shortage in Tuineje and Pájara.
The Cabildo of Fuerteventura has communicated, through a press release, that the Extraordinary Plenary Session of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura has approved today, Tuesday, April 25, with a large majority of 22 votes in favor and one abstention, a modification of credit 13/2023 of Extraordinary Credits for the modernization and improvement of the irrigation network of the center-south area of the Island.
Solutions for water shortages
The proposed budget modification was 132,500 euros, which corresponds to the 2023 annuity, an item that will be used to alleviate the situation of water shortages on the Island, as well as the damages produced in the primary sector by drought and other climatic adversities.
The president of the Insular Institution, Sergio Lloret, advanced during the plenary session that "we are at the limit with the signing of the agreement between the State Mercantile Society of Agricultural Infrastructures (SEIASA) and the Water Supply Consortium of Fuerteventura (CAAF) to give viability to the execution of this irrigation plan, which has been in process for more than 15 years. Fortunately, we are already in the final stretch for the signing of this agreement."
Specifically, what has been proposed from the Service of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries is to enable the credits in the Chapter of Capital Transfers of the Budget of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, with the aim of making an economic contribution to the CAAF for the modernization and improvement of the irrigation network in the municipalities of Tuineje and Pájara, to be financed with the liquid remainder of the Treasury.
Along the same lines, the Vice President and Minister of Finance, Juan Nicolás Cabrera, said that "this budget modification is necessary to have the annuity of 132,500 euros. Therefore, we must incorporate this item immediately to publish it and be able to sign the agreement between the Cabildo, the insular water service and SEIASA, so that it continues to solve the shortage on the Island. Almost 300 thousand euros for the hydraulic emergency works of the Antigua desalination plant.
The Cabildo of Fuerteventura has begun to execute the hydraulic emergency works in the Desalination Plant of Antigua to enhance the water supply of the southern network of the island. This is an interim and transitional solution, given its emergency nature.
A new section of Aguas de Antigua's transmission network
The president of the Cabildo, Sergio Lloret, and the vice president and CEO of Aguas, Juan Nicolás Cabrera visited today, April 27, the works that are being developed in order to create a new section of the Aguas de Antigua transmission network. With this approval, the Water Consortium of Fuerteventura will boost the water supply to the network that connects the reservoir of La Herradura and Gran Tarajal with 1200 cubic meters per day.
The first insular councilor, given the critical situation that Fuerteventura is going through, stressed "the need to inject these surpluses of the plants that have administrative authorization in the public network of the consortium, as is the case of Aguas de Antigua. From this moment, we are injecting about 500 cubic meters into the thicket." In addition, it is an action that "will allow injecting 700 cubic meters a day to the south, so we will have more flow to regulate the northern area," he added.
Need for proper water supplies
The works have been declared an emergency by the Cabildo de Fuerteventura, "given the need to guarantee the correct supply of water to the different towns in the north and south of the island," said the vice president and CEO of Aguas, Juan Nicolás Cabrera.
The hydraulic installation consists of the execution of a section of pipe, appropriate to the existing one and the placement of a pumping equipment. In addition, the execution of a room will be carried out to house inside the pumping group necessary to drive the water. As for the electrical installation, it will be composed of a pumping equipment consisting of three pumps and a control system that will regulate the start-stop and the flow of water to be supplied, according to the conditions of the flow and pressure of the existing pipe of the CAAF.
For his part, the Councilor for Works and Services of the City of Antigua, Juan Cabrera Peña, showed his gratitude, both to Aguas de Antigua and the Cabildo for "fighting to improve the water service in Fuerteventura, which has become a necessity "
The work, which has been awarded to the company Cororasa, has an award value of 297,892.94 euros and will have an execution period of 90 days. Likewise, the waste generated will be managed through the authorized recovery plant for its collection and transport.

New fault in the EDAM pipes of Puerto del Rosario and Gran Tarajal.
The Water Supply Consortium of Fuerteventura has reported that it has been located early today, April 29, a new fault in the GRP pipe DN400 that connects the Puerto del Rosario EDAM with the deposits of La Herradura. This is a fault in the chemical welding in the GRP pipe. Next week the necessary action will be carried out to solve this fault.
Also, last morning, around 03:00 in the morning, a fault was located on Pérez Galdós Street, affecting the entire old town of Gran Tarajal. The operators began, early today, with the work for the repair of this network that is estimated to be resolved throughout the day.
On the other hand, also this morning, the CAAF received a fault warning in the area of Mazacote affecting the sector from Juan Gopar to the Maxorata cheese factory, as well as part of El Cuchillete and the area of the Teleclub of Juan Gopar.
The CAAF apologizes to all affected users and regrets the inconvenience that may have been caused and continue to cause throughout the day.

The Cabildo, through the Water Supply Consortium of Fuerteventura (CAAF), has started this morning the repair in the network that connects the EDAM Puerto del Rosario with the La Herradura deposit. These actions include the fixing of system trouble points located in the DN400 GRP pipe.
Water supply leaks and leaks
The operators arrived this morning from Gran Canaria to start the intervention in a pipe and a valve that caused notable losses and leaks in the supply.
In this sense, the flow of the network will be reduced after this failure in one of the two drives of the system. This flow drives 27,000 cubic meters per day, so only 13,500 cubic meters per day can be supplied. This circumstance will cause less water flow to reach users.
The fault detected on May 1
The action plan envisaged reducing the usual flow rate of the network by up to 50 per cent. In this way, it would go from 27,000 to 13,500 cubic meters per day, for its correct execution during the next few hours. The fault was detected during the day yesterday, Monday, May 1, in one of the main water arteries of Fuerteventura.
Once the necessary interventions have been carried out, the system will need a drying process of about 12 hours before returning the usual flow to the network. It is expected that during the day tomorrow, Wednesday, May 3, the water supply will recover complete normality.
The solution of this incident in the network of the EDAM Puerto del Rosario will put an end to the restrictions that may have been caused in a large part of the island. Except for the areas of Corralejo, Nuevo Horizonte-El Castillo and between Costa Calma and Morro Jable.
Ten breaks in the last two years
Network breakdowns have been common in the last two years, with a total of ten breakages. Five breakdowns were recorded in 2021 (10 April, 24 June, 20 August, 8 November, 31 December). Three breaks occurred in 2022 (17 April, 12 June and 22 September). And in 2023 there have been three breakdowns, although circumstantially they have all occurred in less than a month ( April 9, April 25 and May 1). In that sense, the CAAF continues to seek solutions to this persistent problem.
It is expected with this intervention to return an indispensable service for the citizens of Majorera. From the CAAF they regret the inconvenience that the process may have caused.
(Tamara - our water was off when we got up Tuesday morning and hasn't come back on yet ;( )
The water supply to El Cotillo, particularly in it's more elevated areas, is pitiful. One has to wonder whatever will happen when the new hotel is up and running and the numerous other developments in the village are completed. The additional piping of water from Lajares area doesn't appear to have changed anything.
At any one time there are now at least 200 motorhomes in and around the village, putting a huge additional strain on an already feeble system. Are they charged by CAAF for water consumption?

Still no water this morning. Very third world.
We now have water in Tindaya, a small trickle. I've seen several water tankers topping up the village reservoirs so it's definitely not back to normal supplies yet.
