A 31-year-old mother of two from Germany is calling for urgent attention to safety standards in Fuerteventura’s tourist accommodations after she was violently attacked in her hotel room last month.
Sofiia Pshepyrovska was staying at the SBH Monica Beach Resort in Costa Calma on the night of June 24th, 2025, when an intruder entered her ground-floor room through a slightly open balcony door and launched a brutal assault as she slept.

According to Pshepyrovska, who had arrived at the resort less than five hours earlier, she awoke disoriented and covered in blood after being struck multiple times in the head with a blunt object. During the attack, her finger was slashed to the bone and broken, her wrists were injured, and nearly her entire upper body was left bruised.
She was rushed to intensive care, where doctors closed deep head wounds with 11 metal staples, stitched her finger, and placed her arm in a cast.
Pshepyrovska stressed to Canarian Weekly that she had not consumed any alcohol, never left a drink unattended, and had not spoken to anyone at the hotel prior to the incident. Security camera footage later reportedly showed a man near her room around the time of the assault. Local Police are currently investigating.
Shock over hotel and tour operator handling
What has caused additional outrage is the response, or lack thereof, from the hotel and her tour operator, TUI.
According to Pshepyrovska’s account:
Hotel staff refused to call an ambulance, had no first aid kit on hand, and no one on duty knew how to assist her.
A receptionist even implied she might be hallucinating or schizophrenic, telling her in front of Police officers, “maybe it was all in your imagination.”
No apology was offered by hotel management.
The hotel declined to arrange an airport transfer for her return.
Meanwhile, TUI refused to change her return flight, despite being informed of the attack and her critical injuries.
Fellow guests stepped in to help
Pshepyrovska credits other hotel guests with providing the only real assistance that night. They were the ones who called the Police and insisted an ambulance be dispatched when staff refused. They also gathered her phone, documents, and clothing, even packing a bag with underwear, so she would not have to leave the hospital unclothed, as all her clothing was soaked in blood.

Now recovering and determined to speak out
Back in Germany, Pshepyrovska is recovering from a traumatic brain injury and may require hand surgery. She says she decided to go public to ensure her ordeal does not remain hidden.
In the days following the attack, she began researching the hotel online and discovered several other negative reviews and alarming accounts pointing to serious security concerns.
She hopes her experience will serve as a warning to other travellers and a wake-up call for authorities and tour operators to take hotel safety and guest care far more seriously.
