This is the Plan of 160 million to end the "shortage" of water on the Island
  • The roadmap is committed to heavy investments: the main one, a new desalination plant in the south of Fuerteventura.
  • "The current diagnosis reflects the serious situation of the island's [water] shortages due to obsolescence and deficiencies in hydraulic infrastructures due to lack of planning, renovation and execution, which gives supply problems, causing inconveniences that can affect the quality of life of the inhabitants of the Island."

This conclusion is not that of a group of neighbors affected by cuts in the supply, but is reflected in the Plan to guarantee the supply of water in Fuerteventura and that contemplates investments that exceed 157 million euros. A roadmap that was lacking.

"It is the first time that there is a technical document to renew the entire supply system and with a defined temporary schedule," says the president of the Cabildo, Sergio Lloret: "Until now, what had been done was to put patches to the breakdowns." The list of shortcomings is not short. Some desalination modules are very old, up to 29 years old, and their state of conservation opens the door to "they may have some very serious breakdown that would put the island supply at risk".

Due to its conditions, stops cannot be made in the desalination to carry out preventive maintenance. In general, the water production system on the island is so "fragile" that it "seriously endangers" the water supply in the face of the possible "interruption of production".

Storage is another problem: in the tanks there are "serious aspects" and "there is a risk of contaminating the stored water", since "they do not meet the requirements demanded by current regulations of water for human consumption" and are "easily accessible to unauthorized persons", in addition to there is also a risk of "contamination".
"Many have failures and defects in the structure that lead to water losses and the formation of puddles that attract insects and animals, affecting the quality of the stored water," concludes the Report of the Plan.

  • INVESTMENTS BY REGION

NORTH. A change in how water production and distribution is organized is planned. In the north, the water that reaches Lajares, El Roque and El Cotillo, instead of coming from the La Herradura reservoir, will come from a new head tank in Morro Francisco (1.6 million euros). In the distribution network of Corralejo 1.5 million will be injected and in that of El Cotillo more than 1.2 million. Another 2.1 million will go to the networks of Parque Holandés, Lajares, Villaverde, La Oliva and Tindaya. The overall investment in the north is 21.2 million euros.
CENTER. In the center of the island, an investment of 48.2 million euros is planned, of which 5.2 million would be for the production of water and 16.8 for storage infrastructures, with two water storage tanks in La Herradura (8.1 million), one in Los Estancos (two million) and nine regulatory deposits in different locations. In the renovation of the water distribution network of the capital, two million euros would be injected.
SOUTH." Much of the water that supplies Tuineje, Tarajalejo, La Lajita, La Pared or Pájara comes from the desalination plant in Puerto del Rosario, hence all the problems that have occurred in the south, "says Lloret. To the new desalination plant, pending the definition of the site and which will cost 30 million euros, is added the expansion of Morro Jable (three million). More than 11 million will be allocated to storage, with head deposits in Cruce La Araña and Morro Jable. In the south, the area with the most deficiencies, a total of 64.8 million will be allocated.

The CAAF repairs a breakdown in the water collection pump of the Desalination Plant in Puerto del Rosario.
The Fuerteventura Water Supply Consortium is working on the repair of a breakdown caused in the submerged water collection pump of the Puerto del Rosario desalination plant. As a result of this electrical breakdown, the collection of sea water is reduced and as a consequence, production decreases, which could cause incidents throughout the island territory.

The CAAF regrets the inconvenience caused by this breakdown and continues to work to normalize the supply as soon as possible.

The new agricultural water tariffs and compensation for breakdowns in Fuerteventura come into force.
The Consortium of Water Supply to Fuerteventura (CAAF) has published in the Official Gazette of the Province of Las Palmas the modification of the ordinance that regulates the fees for the provision of drinking water service. With this modification, which enters into force today, the ordinance is adapted to the new regulations in force and contemplates aspects that were not previously collected, such as fortuitous breakdowns in the facilities of subscribers and subscribers that have a negative impact on their bill. In this way, the consumer will not be taxed the water accounted for more in his meter for reasons of accidental breakdowns that are accredited, but the ordinary rate will be applied.

The president of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, Sergio Lloret López, considers the modification of the ordinance to not tax the user in case of accidental breakdowns as fair and also represents "an important step in the fair treatment in terms of the rate applied to subscribers and also in terms of the facilities provided to the primary sector".

According to the insular councilor of Aguas, David de Vera, "the intention is to modulate these costs so that they are as viable as possible and do not affect the subscribers and subscribers. Whenever it is a justified breakdown, the cheapest rate will be applied."

Agricultural water aid for livestock or agricultural professionals is also introduced, applying a reduction of 16%. Thus, the tariff for water for agricultural use drops to €0.50 per cubic metre for full-time professionals and €0.60 per cubic metre for part-time farmers and ranchers.
"All this, as a reflection of the commitment acquired by the Cabildo to conserve the primary sector, meet its needs and promote the distribution of agricultural water, something fundamental for professionals in such an important sector for Fuerteventura, "concludes De Vera.

Tamara: hopefully this is the end of water bills that run into thousands of euros when a leak has gone undetected for months! It still might be in the hundreds.....

Serious breakdown in the water supply line from the Desalination Plant in Puerto del Rosario
  • The CAAF points out that given the seriousness of the breakdown in the impulsion line "it could reduce the water supply to 50%" and affect the supply throughout the Island.
The Consortium of Water Supply to Fuerteventura reported this Sunday that it is working to repair a breakdown produced in the impulsion line that leads from Puerto del Rosario to the main deposit of La Herradura.

The rupture could affect the water supply that in general throughout the island territory, with special incidence in areas such as Valle de Santa Inés, El Cardón, La Lajita, Tesejerague and Valles de Ortega.
The CAAF indicates that it has activated "immediately" the protocol of action and begs "apologies for the inconvenience caused, hoping to restore the supply in the next 24 hours".
A breakdown that, given its severity, could reduce the water supply to 50 percent.
High consumption and low reserves in the head tanks at Easter could increase supply cuts severely, he concludes.

Repaired the fault in the drive line that leads to the main tank of La Herradura
  • After the twelve-hour drying process, the water is already driven to the head tanks.
The Consortium of Water Supply to Fuerteventura (CAAF) has completed the repair work of the breakdown produced yesterday, April 17, in the impulsion line that leads from Puerto del Rosario to the deposit of La Herradura.

After the twelve-hour drying process, from 08.00 hours on Monday, April 18, the water is driven to the head tanks.
After the arrangement, the tanks will be filled progressively and the distribution lines that distribute the water in Fuerteventura will be covered.
The CAAF expects to "recover the supply normally in the coming days, taking longer to reach the areas of higher altitude."
The CAAF "regrets the inconvenience" caused to users, indicating that the severity of the breakdown has affected "the water supply at 50 percent", to which have been added "the high consumption and low reserves in the head tanks at Easter".

Tamara: in Tindaya we still have no water coming through the mains and we are down to the last few litres in our reserve .... unfortunately (for our water supply)  I did a big water session on the garden yesterday before I saw the news, on the other hand the garden needed it with the extreme heat we had. You can't win really  Huh

Edit: our water came back on at 8pm - phew

Costa Calma again suffers cuts due to a breakdown in the pumping station.

The water supply in Costa Calma fails again, this time due to the breakage of part of the machinery of the fire station that occurred on Friday night.

In this sense, the breakage of part of the machinery of the pump produced a flood that made the engines finally were damaged, the complication appears again because all the neighbors that are at an upper level to the pumping station suffer the cut of the supply.

At this time, and although the justice determined that the city council must take charge of the provision of services, the mess around the promoter company and the southern consistory continues, which at the moment seems that the solution can be delayed.

The temporary agreement signed between the company and the city council a week ago, seems to be watering down, forgive the chascarrillo.

The commitment to fix the breakdowns, which was staged a week ago, and that according to the mayor "until there is a firm agreement to put an end to these problems, this rapprochement between the company and the City Council will allow citizens to stop suffering cuts and incidents of the water supply in Costa Calma", it seems, and according to sources close to the company, which was limited to specific breakdowns at that time, not to "subsequent obligations".

The city council asked for time to receive the provision of services dictated by the justice, but the situation in Costa Calma remains complicated, at least for the moment.

The City Council of Pájara communicated this Wednesday, May 25, to the neighbors of Costa Calma that two tanks with drinking water have been placed in the town, with the aim of temporarily alleviating the breakdowns of the facilities that the concessionaire company FuertCan SL continues not to fix.

The population will be able to collect drinking water for their personal use in the vats that have been installed in Jahn Reisen Street, in front of the Botanical Garden, and in Punta de los Molinillos Street, in front of the Morasol Atlántico Aparthotel.
Faced with this situation, the city council takes this provisional measure, while work continues to complete the repair of the damaged pumps.

The Fuerteventura Water Supply Consortium announces that it has scheduled a supply cut for next Tuesday, June 7, to improve the impulsion network that leads from the desalination plant in Puerto del Rosario to the main reservoir in La Herradura. The work to improve this network will begin at 07.00 hours of the aforementioned date.

Last April there was a breakdown in this impulsion network, being repaired in less than 24 hours. However, given the continuation of water losses, it is necessary to recover these tasks in order to solve the situation before the summer season. From the CAAF it is also reported that these are necessary works to improve facilities that present a remarkable fragility due to their obsolescence.
The scheduled outage is expected to significantly affect the standardized supply of municipalities such as Antigua, Puerto del Rosario or Gran Tarajal. For this reason, the CAAF apologizes to users.
To me drinking responsibly means do not spill it.

The CAAF finishes at 6:00 p.m. the works to improve the impulsion line to the La Herradura reservoir.

The Consortium of Water Supply to Fuerteventura (CAAF) communicates that the work of improving the impulsion line that leads from Puerto del Rosario to the regulatory deposits of La Herradura have finished in the afternoon of today, Tuesday, June 7, at 6:00 p.m. This line was suffering incidents since last April. These are necessary works to improve facilities that present a remarkable fragility due to their obsolescence.

After the drying of the chemical welding, scheduled for this morning, the CAAF will begin the work of filling the main pipe with the aim of being fully operational during the morning of Wednesday, June 8. Subsequently, the restoration of supply is expected in the rest of the deposits that are located throughout the island territory.
Also, taking advantage of the break scheduled by the CAAF, several actions have been carried out to improve the distribution network in different locations of Fuerteventura. All these improvements would have needed an exclusive cut for its commissioning, so the CAAF has taken advantage of the situation of the main drive line to undertake all these actions in order to improve the general supply in Fuerteventura.
