This is the Plan of 160 million to end the "shortage" of water on the Island
- The roadmap is committed to heavy investments: the main one, a new desalination plant in the south of Fuerteventura.
- "The current diagnosis reflects the serious situation of the island's [water] shortages due to obsolescence and deficiencies in hydraulic infrastructures due to lack of planning, renovation and execution, which gives supply problems, causing inconveniences that can affect the quality of life of the inhabitants of the Island."
This conclusion is not that of a group of neighbors affected by cuts in the supply, but is reflected in the Plan to guarantee the supply of water in Fuerteventura and that contemplates investments that exceed 157 million euros. A roadmap that was lacking.
"It is the first time that there is a technical document to renew the entire supply system and with a defined temporary schedule," says the president of the Cabildo, Sergio Lloret: "Until now, what had been done was to put patches to the breakdowns." The list of shortcomings is not short. Some desalination modules are very old, up to 29 years old, and their state of conservation opens the door to "they may have some very serious breakdown that would put the island supply at risk".
Due to its conditions, stops cannot be made in the desalination to carry out preventive maintenance. In general, the water production system on the island is so "fragile" that it "seriously endangers" the water supply in the face of the possible "interruption of production".
Storage is another problem: in the tanks there are "serious aspects" and "there is a risk of contaminating the stored water", since "they do not meet the requirements demanded by current regulations of water for human consumption" and are "easily accessible to unauthorized persons", in addition to there is also a risk of "contamination".
"Many have failures and defects in the structure that lead to water losses and the formation of puddles that attract insects and animals, affecting the quality of the stored water," concludes the Report of the Plan.

- INVESTMENTS BY REGION
NORTH. A change in how water production and distribution is organized is planned. In the north, the water that reaches Lajares, El Roque and El Cotillo, instead of coming from the La Herradura reservoir, will come from a new head tank in Morro Francisco (1.6 million euros). In the distribution network of Corralejo 1.5 million will be injected and in that of El Cotillo more than 1.2 million. Another 2.1 million will go to the networks of Parque Holandés, Lajares, Villaverde, La Oliva and Tindaya. The overall investment in the north is 21.2 million euros.
CENTER. In the center of the island, an investment of 48.2 million euros is planned, of which 5.2 million would be for the production of water and 16.8 for storage infrastructures, with two water storage tanks in La Herradura (8.1 million), one in Los Estancos (two million) and nine regulatory deposits in different locations. In the renovation of the water distribution network of the capital, two million euros would be injected.
SOUTH." Much of the water that supplies Tuineje, Tarajalejo, La Lajita, La Pared or Pájara comes from the desalination plant in Puerto del Rosario, hence all the problems that have occurred in the south, "says Lloret. To the new desalination plant, pending the definition of the site and which will cost 30 million euros, is added the expansion of Morro Jable (three million). More than 11 million will be allocated to storage, with head deposits in Cruce La Araña and Morro Jable. In the south, the area with the most deficiencies, a total of 64.8 million will be allocated.
