Fuerteventura works for the decentralization of desalinated water production centers.
The Technical Commission of the Insular Plan for Cooperation in Actions of Guarantee of the Domestic Water Supply (PICABAS) of the island of Fuerteventura 2020-2025, held last Tuesday, November 15, an "intense session" of work during which "the entire preliminary project that will guarantee the drinking water supply system of Fuerteventura has been admitted and given conformity, without prejudice to those adjustments or modifications that we have to make during the processing of the projects", explained the presidentof the Cabildo de Fuerteventura, Sergio Lloret.
It is, in the words of the island councilor, "a complex action in its processing, but very necessary for the island, which has been waiting for it to be carried out for more than a decade, to ensure that all families and all corners of Fuerteventura have the supply of a service as essential as drinking water ", Highlighted.
The session was attended by, in addition to the president of the insular institution and responsible for the Area of Infrastructures and Territorial Planning, Sergio Lloret, the Minister of Water, David de Vera; the manager of the Water Supply Consortium of Fuerteventura (CAAF), Gonzalo Báez Fumero; his counterpart in the Island Water Council of Fuerteventura (CIAF), Domingo Montañez; as well as technicians from both the CAAF and the CIAF, as well as the Ministry of Water and the Ministry of Infrastructure of the Cabildo.
The document valued and formed during the session will serve "as a basis and reference to complete the contracting of the large projects that will be launched under the new model that has, as a central and most important nucleus, the objective of decentralizing the production centers, as a formula to guarantee the supply to the entire island and, especially, to the areas that register greater incidences" explained Lloret.
It is a preliminary project that, in the words of the Minister of Water, David de Vera, "will be the structuring axis of the set of priority hydraulic investments that Fuerteventura needs to guarantee, once and for all, the supply of drinking water to the population," he said.
In this way, the Commission has laid the foundations that will result in the impulse, from the Area of Territorial Planning of the Cabildo, of three projects of Insular Interest: the one referring to the Desalination Plant of Corralejo and its systems of impulsion and pipes; that of the Puerto del Rosario Plant, also including its impulsion and gravity pipes, and that of the new Desalination Plant projected for the Southern Region of the island.
For all this, as detailed by the president of the Cabildo, "the design of the system has been taken into account, in order to apply mechanisms that allow a reduction in pumping needs and, in this way, achieve the reduction of the energy necessary for its operation that, as we have seen, significantly affects the costs of water desalination and distribution on the island, in addition to being a point of special relevance for sustainability, which requires systems capable of reducing the carbon footprint, "said Lloret.
Once the foundations of this preliminary project have been laid, the commission agreed that the result of the same will be incorporated into both the Hydrological Plan and the Fuerteventura Management Plan, once "these planning instruments are completed", specified the president.
Meanwhile and "given the urgent need to advance in the promotion of these projects of insular interest", the Ministry of Territorial Planning, prior to the assessment of the Plenary, will proceed with the processing of the three projects, whose specifications "we hope that they are drafted by the end of the year to be able to be already in the processing of the same in the first quarter of 2023 ", Sergio Lloret predicted.

"Final stretch" in the drafting of the 3 major water supply projects on the island.
The projects of Insular Interest called to guarantee the drinking water of Fuerteventura generated with clean energies already have the definitive bases for their technical drafting.
During the last session held of the Technical Commission of the Insular Plan for Cooperation in Actions of Guarantee of the Domestic Water Supply (PICABAS) of Fuerteventura 20-25, the final content and the processing procedure that will lead to the technical drafting of the three projects of Island Interest through which the Cabildo pursues the integral renovation of the island's water supply system has been specified.
Thus enter "the final stretch" these projects that, in the words of the president of the Island Corporation, Sergio Lloret, "will guarantee that drinking water reaches each and every one of the corners and each and every one of the families of our island," he said.
The session was attended by the president of the Cabildo and responsible for the Area of Infrastructures and Territorial Planning, Sergio Lloret; the manager of the Water Supply Consortium of Fuerteventura (CAAF), Gonzalo Báez Fumero; the manager of the Island Water Council of Fuerteventura (CIAF), Domingo Montañez; in addition to the technicians of both the CAAF and the CIAF, as well as the Ministry of Water and the Ministry of Infrastructures of the Cabildo.
The agreements reached during the same will be reflected in the technical documents that are expected to be ready "over the coming weeks" and that will define three major projects of Island Interest: the one corresponding to the Desalinated Water Production Plant of Corralejo, together with its corresponding impulsion systems and pipes; the one related to the Puerto del Rosario Plant, also together with its impulsion and conduction systems; and that of the new Desalination Plant and the entire drive conduction system planned for the Southern Region of the island.
The projects of these three large groups will also include their respective self-sufficiency systems that will allow "reducing costs in the generation of desalinated water on the island, which we have already seen in recent times how energy dependence leaves us exposed to market variations, which have made us exceed the 5 million that cost the receipt of electricity associated with desalination, up to almost 18 with the new rates in force."
Therefore, as highlighted by the president, "it is important to implement a system that reduces energy needs, which is achieved thanks to the new pumping systems, and also reduce energy costs, which we will achieve through self-sufficiency through clean energy sources, also contributing to the sustainability objectives of the island. " said President Sergio Lloret.
In this way, the three major projects of Island Interest that will end up being incorporated into both the Hydrological Plan and the General Management Plan of Fuerteventura are "advancing at a good pace" with the aim of "guaranteeing both the supply of one of the basic and essential services of the island, such as drinking water; as the ability to do so with own resources, through the generation of energy from alternative sources," said Lloret.

The Water Supply Consortium of Fuerteventura (CAAF) has carried out, over the last week, different emergency interventions to carry out repairs in plants and infrastructures linked to the water production centers of Puerto del Rosario, Gran Tarajal and Corralejo, which have meant interruptions and reductions in pressure in different areas of the island.
Although all incidents are solved today, Thursday, January 5, the water levels in the head tanks of these centers are still recovering. Reason why users may continue to notice pressure losses in the home service during the next few days.
Specifically, the production center of Puerto del Rosario has been receiving maintenance work throughout the past week. Actions to which was added, last Wednesday, December 28, the record of a fault in the high pressure pump of the plant, which generated the drop in pressure in the deposits of La Herradura. Once the incident has been resolved, over the next few days, users of Puerto del Rosario will gradually notice the recovery of normality in water pressure levels in their homes.
For its part, a breakdown in the impulsion pipe from Gran Tarajal to Corral Blanco caused a supply cut in the network from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday, December 31. Once the fault has been solved, the deposits in the areas of Cardón, Tesejarague, Tarajalejo or La Lajita, among others, may still register losses in water pressure that, in the same way as in Puerto del Rosario, will be solved as the levels of the southern headwaters deposits increase.
Finally, yesterday, Wednesday, January 4, a fault affected the impulsion pipe between the Production Center of Corralejo and the deposits of Morro Francisco. Incident that made it necessary to interrupt production at the plant to proceed to unload the affected pipe and complete its repair, causing interruptions in the supply that have affected the areas of Corralejo and Tamaragua.
Once this last incident has also been resolved, the affected areas, in the same way as the previous ones, may continue to notice pressure losses over the next few hours, while the levels of the Corralejo tank are restored.
The Cabildo de Fuerteventura and the CAAF wanted to send users their "most sincere apologies" for the inconvenience that these incidents may have caused and could continue to cause in homes in the coming hours.
The CAAF services continue to work to improve the conditions of the supply of drinking water that reaches homes and businesses throughout the island territory.

Pájara foresees possible water cuts from Monday.
The City Council of Pájara reports that they have already begun working on solving the breakdown of a pipe on Jahn Reisen Avenue. After knowing the situation, together with FuertCan technicians, we have proceeded to make the assessment of the fault to find possible solutions and proceed to repair as soon as possible.
The Councilor for Water, Dunia Álvaro, details that they have observed that the break is close to other pipes, so the repair works will begin to be undertaken on Monday. As an emergency measure, the pressure has been lowered to guarantee the supply of water to the neighbors during the weekend.
"As of Monday, possible cuts in the supply are expected, caused by the actions, so that normality can be restored as soon as possible," adds the councilor, who explains that they will be announced properly.
The section of the damaged pipe comes from the Plant and runs to the point of impulsion of the Hotel Sbh Costa Calma Palace, so it affects that entire area. The volume of water sent to this impulsion point has been lowered, in order to avoid wasting a large amount of drinking water.

The CAAF and the CIAF declare the Water Emergency Situation in the areas most affected by water cuts in Fuerteventura.
The president of the Cabildo de Fuerteventura, Sergio Lloret, and the vice president Juan Nicolás Cabrera held yesterday, Monday, January 30, an intense working meeting with the Island Water Council of Fuerteventura (CIAF) and the Water Supply Consortium of Fuerteventura (CAAF), which was incorporated, in a second part, the mayor of Pájara, Pedro Armas, and the Councilor for Water of the municipality, Dunia Álvaro.
During the session, the problems that different areas of the island are currently suffering in terms of water supply were addressed. Specifically, in the municipality of Pájara, mainly in La Lajita, Tarajal de Sancho, Cardón and La Pared.
"We are already working to remedy this dramatic situation that we are experiencing on the island, generated by not facing this problem for decades and that fortunately now the solution is defined," said President Lloret. Who explained that the definitive solution to the problem will be given through the Integral Hydrological Plan of the island, which is materializing through the actions of PICABAS, as well as the drafting of the three major projects of Insular Interest for the hydrological reconfiguration of the South, North and central region of the island.
In order to provide a quick solution to the current situation, the CAAF and the CIAF have agreed to declare the Water Emergency Situation, which allows, without delay, the injection into the Island Water Network both third-party supplies and water supplies from tanks, in order to "immediately remedy the situation that users in the most affected areas are suffering, mainly in the Southern Region".
The mayor of Pájara, Pedro Armas, wanted to "thank the Cabildo, the CIAF and the CAAF for the diligence in the actions and we hope that with the decisions adopted and the measures that are going to be taken, this dramatic situation that many areas of our municipality are experiencing can be reversed as quickly as possible. "
This "exceptional" measure will solve the problems of these areas, as well as others affected in the municipality of Tuineje and in other parts of the island, meanwhile the CAAF continues to advance with the works and actions planned through PICABAS.
As President Lloret explained, "there are exceptional circumstances of supply, in an essential service such as drinking water, for which we cannot wait for the works derived from PICABAS to be executed to remedy this dramatic situation in some parts of the island".
"We are working with all the efforts we can to immediately remedy serious emergencies, taking into account that we find ourselves with an obsolete system, which no longer presents only incapacity, due to its dimensions, but in response to the demands of the island," said Vice President Juan Nicolás.
The execution of the works linked to PICABAS, as well as the development of the three projects of Insular Interest that will draw the new hydrological facilities and pipelines of the North Region, the South Region and the central area of the island, together with the Hydrological Plan of the island, are the three axes on which the Island Services work in coordination with the CAAF and the CIAF in order to redefine and resolve " in a definitive and stable way" the island's water supply problems.

Antigua transfers 700 cubic meters of water per day to the CAAF to support the Water Emergency situation.
The City Council of Antigua, the main shareholder of the Empresa Mixta Aguas de Antigua, chaired by the mayor, Matías Peña García, approves the supply of 700 cubic meters of water per day to the network of the Fuerteventura Water Supply Consortium, CAAF.
"A decision that responds to the situation qualified as dramatic and declared as a Water Emergency, especially in the south," says the municipal councilor, Matías Peña.
The water supply decided by the City Council of Antigua to minimize the continuous water cuts suffered by the municipalities, would be carried out from the Montaña Blanca desalination plant to the nearest network available to the CAAF in the area for distribution.
"It is not the first time that the City Council of Antigua and the Aguas de Antigua Joint Company approve strengthening the water supply on the island, although in this case the urgency and need is evident," says Peña García.
The municipal institution clarifies that this contribution of Antigua to the insular water supply, at no time diminishes or harms the supply guaranteed by Aguas de Antigua to the coastal and tourist area of the municipality.
"The City Council of Antigua considers unacceptable the continuous cuts in the water supply that affects all the municipalities of the island," says Mayor Matías Peña, requesting the Cabildo de Fuerteventura "an effective and immediate intervention and economic investment in the improvement and modernization of the insular hydraulic facilities to guarantee what is a basic right of all the neighbors".
