34.6 million CAAF budget for 2023.

The Consortium increases its budget by 15.4% to deal with the water emergency with the support of local councils

NEWSROOMFUERTEVENTURA

The Board of the Fuerteventura Water Supply Consortium has approved the general budget of the CAAF for 2024, which amounts to 34.6 million euros, which represents an increase of 15.4% compared to the previous year. This gives rise to an increase of nearly 5 million euros that is aimed at supporting actions related to the water emergency declared in Fuerteventura.

The president of the Cabildo and the CAAF, Lola García, indicates that "the budgets of 34.6 million of the Consortium are going to be combined with the items of the general budgets of the Cabildo which, for the most part, are also going to be destined to the hydraulic works that Fuerteventura needs so much to improve, in a more immediate way, production, the storage and distribution of water in Fuerteventura".

Lola García thanked the effort of the human team of the services of the CAAF and the Cabildo to speed up the approval of such necessary budgets. He also extended this thanks to the municipal representatives of the CAAF present at the session, who unanimously supported the budgets, "which means that they understand the importance of working in a coordinated manner so that the situation improves in each and every one of the municipalities. They are aware of this and, therefore, they have not only supported them, but have also increased their contribution to the CAAF budgets by 36.19%, which allows the increase of almost 5 million euros in the budgets".

Island Water Council

This week, the general budget of the Island Water Council for 2024 was also approved. "A budget that amounts to 1.2 million euros and that is expected to continue to increase over the next year with the incorporation of remainders," says Minister Adargoma Hernández.

The Minister of Water explains that "this investment will be aimed at executing a series of works in the Barranco del Ciervo and other hydraulic actions that are necessary within the Fuerteventura Hydrological Plan".

The new hydraulic emergency works include a reservoir in Guerime.

The Cabildo of Fuerteventura has declared an emergency a new batch of hydraulic works for almost 13 million euros, including the new tank in Guerime. This was approved by the Governing Council on Friday, December 29, with the aim of continuing to contribute to improving the water supply situation in Fuerteventura.

In the case of this new lot declared before the end of 2023, it includes such important works as the construction of a regular tank in Guerime, budgeted at 1.7 million euros, this being one of the essential actions to improve the supply in the southern area of Fuerteventura, along with the gravity pipeline from this tank to the La Pared area.

Likewise, a new reverse osmosis desalination module will be installed in Gran Tarajal, the distribution network will be improved in areas such as Corralejo, Gran Tarajal or Casillas del Ángel and a new distribution network will be promoted in Puerto del Rosario. At the same time, the reform and expansion of the Marcos Sánchez pumping station and the conduction from the Lajares reservoir to El Cotillo is improved. "All of these actions are marked as strategic to improve the situation in the north, center and south of the island," says the water minister, Adargoma Hernández.

According to the president of the Cabildo de Fuerteventura, Lola García, "these nine actions join the ten works that were already declared an emergency last August for almost 18.5 million euros and that began to be executed since September". "Therefore, we are talking about promoting more than 30 million euros, with funding from the FDCAN, in hydraulic emergency actions, plus the rest of the works that are also part of the Island Plan for Cooperation in Water Supply Guarantee Actions (PICABAS)," says Lola García.

For the Vice-President and Minister of Infrastructure, Blas Acosta, "the speed with which the hydraulic emergency works are promoted demonstrates the commitment acquired by this government group to improve the water situation in Fuerteventura". Acosta points out that "one of the criteria for the awarding of the works is the reduction of the execution period, given the urgency that they entail."

The Minister of Water, Adargoma Hernández, details that "the emergency works declared last year are already in an advanced state of execution and some of them have been completed, such as the reform of the Tamaragua reservoir".

Possible water cuts this Tuesday for maintenance.

The CAAF states that "it improves pumping from the La Herradura reservoir to Calderetilla with maintenance work"

The Fuerteventura Water Supply Consortium will carry out this Tuesday "the necessary maintenance work to improve pumping from the main reservoirs of La Herradura to Calderetil. These actions are necessary to improve the distribution of water in Fuerteventura", they say in a press release.

Likewise, they explain that "the renovation works of the main deposits of La Herradura are progressing at a good pace. This is one of the emergency works that, once completed, will allow all the main tanks of La Herradura to be put into operation".

Work is also progressing to have a new pumping station from La Herradura to the Calderetilla reservoir. Due to these works, the service could be affected from 12:00 to 16:00 on Tuesday, January 23.

These actions, explains the CAAF, are part of the emergency works that have been prioritized as immediate by the CAAF and the technical commission of the Island Plan for Cooperation in Actions to Guarantee the Water Supply of Fuerteventura. They represent an investment of 30 million euros, and in addition to the aforementioned works, the complete renovation of the network from Calderetilla to Tiscamanita, the connection between the Morro Francisco reservoir (Corralejo) to Lajares and the opening of three seawater collection wells in Puerto del Rosario are already underway.

Hope that the work on the Tamaragua reservoir produces some improvement to the supply. Constant lack of water to our community. Many of us have installed water tanks to help us have a backup, while we wait for tankers to resupply until CAAF can repair the many problems we have had in recent years.

I understand the Tamaragua reservoir work was completed a few weeks ago so any improvements should already be active. I hope that is the case.

I've been watching the 'progress' of the new supply pipe from La Oliva to Tindaya - it started well coming down the hill slope near HiperDino in Villaverde and then ground to a halt. It looks like some prep is being done on the southern side of La Oliva as well but goodness only knows what route it is going to take through the own itself! I appreciate it would probably cost more to go around the outside of the town (Casa Coroneles area possibly) but I would of thought it would be much easier/quicker than going through the town centre! and better for future maintenance.

Tindaya is definitely in need of a better supply - we've had nothing for 3 or 4 days now, again!

Thanks Tamara.

I arrive back in March so hopefully will notice the difference. It sounds like it may have improved the supply, as our president sends us emails when CAAF stops supplying. Recently I noticed that he hasn`t been posting warnings about the supply.

The Board of the Water Council of Fuerteventura initially approves the third cycle of the Hydrological Plan.

The General Meeting of the Island Water Council has today agreed to the initial approval of the third cycle of the Hydrological Plan of the Fuerteventura River Basin District (2021-2027). A document that, in the words of the president of the Cabildo, Lola García, "includes all the planning for the use and conservation of water in Fuerteventura with more than 200 measures that have been executed, are under development and those that are programmed to guarantee not only the supply, but also for the reuse of water that is essential in a hydrographic demarcation such as Fuerteventura".

The Minister of Water, Adargoma Hernández, thanked the technical staff who have been planning this work to have initially approved a document that "has been waiting for a long time and that includes the necessary actions, many of them already in execution". Hernández announced that "we have finally approved it initially and in the middle of the year we will also begin to work on the fourth cycle of the Hydrological Plan."

For his part, the manager of the CIAF, Domingo Montañés, explained that the program of measures is the result of a participatory process and integrates those necessary actions in supply infrastructures, desalination, sanitation and purification, irrigation, among others.

In addition to the works to improve the supply of water for industrial production or domestic use that are included in the Island Plan for Cooperation in Actions to Guarantee the Water Supply, other measures are included for the use of reclaimed water and for the production of agricultural water, with actions in riverbeds, reservoirs and other systems for the use of this resource. as well as exclusive infrastructures for the primary sector, such as the Irrigation Plan for the south-central area in agreement with the State, which is expected to begin this year. An infrastructure that will be complemented by similar projects to increase the cultivated area throughout the island.

Likewise, the General Meeting of the Island Water Council approved the Fuerteventura Flood Risk Management Plan in its second cycle (2021-2027), which includes maps and plans for flood risk management. The plan identifies 34 areas of significant potential risk, of which 27 are of coastal origin and seven of river-rainfall origin, and 41 measures for flood prevention, protection and recovery.

Once approved, the documents will be taken to the Plenary of the Cabildo for provisional approval and, subsequently, to the Government of the Canary Islands for final approval.
