I was pushed for time and couldn't turn around and go back for a picture but it was like one of the old pics come to life - magical!

The City Council of La Oliva has removed 12 tons of waste from the Barranca de Cañada de Melián, in Lajares, "an area that has been rehabilitated and closed because it has been subject to indiscriminate dumping of garbage. The entrance has been closed and has been expanded the disruption of the perimeter to prevent this situation from repeating itself, "said Councilor for the Environment, David Fajardo.
The waste removed has been transferred to the Zurita Environmental Complex, including 400 kilos of tires and 2,400 of household appliances and electrical appliances that have been deposited separately for treatment and recycling.
The closure of this old dump has been carried out through the specialized company Martínez Cano, which during the last week has been working with the necessary machinery and personnel to reduce the impacts and rehabilitate the ravine, and in coordination with the Agency of Protection of the Urban and Natural Environment. Once the waste of the Barranca de Cañada de Melián has been removed and its access closed, this action will be completed with the signaling facility, detailing in this and other points the prohibition of littering and informing about the location and schedules of the Clean Point.

Citizen Participation for a more sustainable use of the territory in La Oliva, within the Majanicho Environmental Assessment project.
The City Council has collaborated with the Government of the Canary Islands in the Workshop "We want to be ZEPA", which this weekend has collected citizen and neighborhood proposals to incorporate the compensatory measures of the Partial Plan
A team of technicians from different disciplines is seeking citizen proposals to incorporate into the Environmental Evaluation project of the Partial Plan of Majanicho, one of the previous steps necessary to define the compensatory measures to the Partial Plan SAU12.
This week the workshop 'We want to be ZEPA' was held at the Root People's Cultural Association, in La Oliva, which was attended by social groups from different fields and also private neighbors, who raised different demands on issues such as the regulation of camping areas, the rehabilitation of damaged areas and, in general, a better management of the coast.
This citizen participation initiative is part of the action plan to be developed by the Government of the Canary Islands, from the Ministry of Territorial Policy, Sustainability and Security of the Government of the Canary Islands, and with the collaboration of the Oliva City Council and the Cabildo de Fuerteventura, to establish compensatory measures to recover the damages caused by said partial plan.
The mayor of La Oliva, Isaí Blanco, excused himself for not being able to attend this act, although he wanted to transfer that "from the Government in La Oliva we are fully committed to the protection of the territory, and this project is important because it opens a door to the environmental rehabilitation of our landscapes and natural spaces. The damage that this urbanization did to a virgin area cannot be undone, but we can partially recover the area and develop many other positive programs for flora, fauna and protected areas. "
It should be remembered that the City Council of La Oliva was present at the meeting held in Brussels last year, in which the three Canarian administrations and the Ministry of Environment proposed to develop a plan of preventive, corrective and compensatory actions with respect to the Partial Plan of Majanicho
Among the proposals that the drafting team of this Environmental Assessment is working on, it is worth highlighting the rehabilitation of the urbanization environment, the elaboration of a hubara protection plan, the creation of a new ZEC zone (Special Conservation Zone) in the Cueva del Llano, or a proposal to comprehensively manage the ZEPA areas of Fuerteventura, connecting some of them and expanding their surface.
Among the latest proposals incorporated into this document, is the creation of a management plan for the Majanicho SPA, making compatible the use of the entire north coast, from Corralejo to Majanicho, so that everyone can enjoy in a sustainable and respectful way with the species of this habitat.
Work is also being done on another partial plan, the SAU8. Although this was not fully developed, it was built on an important dune system in the surroundings of El Cotillo Lighthouse, so landscape rehabilitation measures are proposed.
Another novelty regarding the initial proposal presented to the EU is the incorporation of a study on archaeological and ethnographic heritage, a section of great wealth in the north of Fuerteventura, and which is undoubtedly capable of adopting measures for its conservation and put in value.
Citizen Proposals
The technical team of the area of Citizen Participation of the Environmental Evaluation project of the Partial Plan of Majanicho, gathered the feelings of those attending this workshop regarding the environmental situation of the municipality, as well as different proposals with the objective of contributing to the analysis of the situation, the generation of alternatives and the final debate of the proposals for harmonization measures for coastal protection and management of the ZEPA area in the north of Fuerteventura.
This workshop is part of a participatory process that has been taking place since July of this year, and among the proposals made with the assistants to 'We want to be ZEPA', the technicians designated by the Government of the Canary Islands have reflected a general situation of discontent and skepticism, reflecting its concern when considering that measures are needed to improve the protection and conservation of the territory and the natural values of the municipality.
After a debate, opinions were expressed regarding whether this Environmental Impact Assessment could legitimize urbanization, or raising the need to advance the compatibility of coastal uses by different agents such as surf schools, motor homes, campers , fishermen, hikers, tours, tourists, etc., who daily this space.
In the third dynamic by work groups, individuals called attention to values of interest in the northern area of the Majorero coast as ponds of dizziness that are still used, and where the largest tabaibal of the island is located, the location of natural salinas , crop fields, paleontological heritage sites, location of wrecks, fishing areas, beaches affected by sebas, etc., so it was agreed to make a joint visit between the team that is developing the Landscape Units and these neighbors.
Solutions to the problems
Another group, made up of groups and associations, also linked to environmental organizations and professionals linked to the environment, some of them members of the Olive Participation Council, raised problems and solutions to issues such as citizen ignorance of these values, the the fact that the population does not know what the SPA is, the absence of regulation of activities such as camping and road traffic, the absence of restrictions to protect species such as the hubara, the incidence of dogs, people and bikes, lack of interest and training of technical and political personnel, traffic without speed control and consequent road insecurity, incivism, neglect of Cultural Heritage and ethnographic values and landscapes, or poor management between the Biosphere Reserve and the associative fabric and environmental.
To counteract these problems detected, dissemination campaigns were proposed in the workshop, organizing campaigns, talks and working with associations, offering training to shellfish and fishermen before receiving their license, compulsory permits for camping activities, reducing to zero the activities in areas where the hubara inhabits, provide technical environmental training to public administration personnel, establish a speed limit of 30 km / h. and sanctions to those who overcome it, calm of traffic with measures such as not fixing the road, closing of dirt tracks in phases, the international protection of the Malpais and stone walls as UNESCO heritage, expanding the Malpaís de La Arena and declaring it as a protected natural space, or to value the cultural landscape of the Olive and its uniqueness, in addition to designing a participatory action plan and executing it.
According to the Cabildo website, the Opera in Puerto del Rosario for next month had been postponed, but not cancelled.
Anyone with tickets will be able to use them for the future date - whenever that will be.
